Model: Starmax 3000/240N/32MB/4.3GB/8xCd
RAM: 32meg
RAM Enhancer: None
OS Version: System 7.6
Description:
I bought this Starmax thru Ubid and it came with System 7.6. The unit worked fine and then I upgraded to 8.0. This worked well for several weeks and then the unit started to not read CDs, off and on. After another week it would not read CDs at all and I had to send it back to the warranty people. I heard from the Rep. today and she indicated that they think the problem is that 8.0 is not compatable with the Starmax. When I asked her how someone could upgrade she said that I would have to contact Motorola for an upgrade. So my question is-what is going on and have you heard of this before? If a unit is working with OS 7.6 why wouldn't it also work with 8.0 as they are both MAC Operating Systems. Now I know that we were not able to upgrade to 8.0 from 7.5, must be other things I don't know also. I just wanted to get a second opinion, they are supposed to reinstall 7.6 and see if that is the problem. Thanks,
Robert Mildes

Hello Robert,
Well MacOS 8.0, 8.1 and 8.5 are compatible with a Starmax Computer from Motorola. I know this because I have a Starmax with 8.5 on it right now.
The cdrom problem is a known one. It has to do with MacOS 8.0 Apple CD-ROM extension not being compatible with the cdrom drive of some starmax computers. You can use the old Apple CD-ROM extension from the 7.6 system if you need to. You may want to make sure you are using Apple CD-ROM extension. Some of the Starmax computers also had FWB's CD-ROM Toolkit.
One resource you may wish to become familiar with is

which also has a mailing list dealing with all things Starmax related. =)
Good luck and let me know how it works out,
