Hi David,
I'm Laura and I'll be answering your question today.

It's easy to start from a Zip disk.......

1) Make a startup Zip. You can use the Utilities from OS 8.1 to create
a minimal disk, or you can simply copy the system folder and any other files
you want to have on that disk from your hard drive (just drag and drop!)

2) Go to Control Panels, select "Startup Disk", and click on the Zip
icon.

3) Restart your computer. You should be using the zip as a boot disk now.

(If the disk tries to eject before startup, check the preferences in Iomega
tools. You can specify when and if the disk is automatically ejected)

If you need to restart from a zip w/out selecting the startup disk,
(Like if the system won't boot from the hard drive) it shouldn't be a problem.
The startup sequence should search through any connected disks and will find the zip.

Hope this answers your question!

Laura
