Hello Lou, and thank you for contacting macosx.com. Do you have your Mac OS install CD's that came with your iMac? If so I can walk you through a way to reset your password using those CD's. In brief you can restart your iMac, booting from the OS CD, and they there is an option for resetting your password for any user.

Great, here is what you need to do:
1. Insert the Install CD 1 into your computer.
2. Reboot your Mac, and after you hear the start up chime hold down the "c" key on your keyboard. This will cause your Mac to boot off of the CD instead of its hard drive.
3. When the installer window comes up, choose "reset password" from the Installer menu.
4. Select your hard drive, select the user you want to reset the password for, and enter the new password you want twice, then click save. Hit OK on the dialog box that pops up.
5. From the Reset Password menu choose "Quit Reset Password".
6. From the Installer menu choose "Quit Installer".
7. Choose "Startup Disk" from the dialog box that pops up.
8. Select your internal hard drive and click the Restart button.
That should do it, let me know how it goes.
