DESCRIPTION:
I want to backup my OS and other programs to the IOMEGA tape unit(1.6mb to 3.2mb)that came with my computer in 1996. It works fine for backing up data files but I want to be able to perform a complete "restore" after a catastrospic failure. I have had big failures and find it takes me weeks of spare time to try to remember, find and download all the patches, fixes and programs purchased on the internet. Ditto Tools, version5.1a came with my computer and was pre-installed at Gateway. I am in hopes that their is a program that will make an exact image of my hardrive including my O.S. and other programs. As it is now I only seem to be able to save data files but not working programs or my O.S. Gateway does not appear to know anything about tape systems and it has been impossible to get any response from IOMEGA. Thank You for your time. Dale H
Dear Dale,
The Ditto software should be able to backup everything on your hard drive to tape (Microsoft Backup - installed with Windows 95/98 - should do the same thing). Other companies, such as Seagate and DataQuest also sell software that do the same. I personally have had a bad experience with the Ditto drive (proprietary software/driver, bad Iomega support, faulty spool detector light (which allowed the tape to get pulled off the spool when rewinding)), so I recommend being patient and be willing to experiment with different software packages.
