I have been a Mac user for over 15 years. I am an artist NOT a techie. I love Macs because they are so user friendly - but when I do have a problem I get lost with the tech language. I hope you can help me!
About my Mac:
version 10.1.5
memory 256 MB
Processor Power PC C4
Problem: Generally my computer has become increasing slow in my application and internet. I do not know if I have too much stored on my computer or if there is a technical problem. Please advise me as to where to begin!!!

Hi Denise,
I usually use Onyx (you can download it through Macupdate or any download site) to clean the computer once a week. Just have a look at the settings, let the software carry out all the maintenance routines, restart and you should notice that your machine is considerably faster.

Sorry I did not get back sooner as I've been out of town this weekend. I found Onyx but unforunately it requires 10.3 or later. I have 10.1.5. I was browsing for something similar for my system but have had no luck.
Any other ideas?
Thanks Denise

Hello again Denise,
I've looked all around the Internet but I can't find a maintenance utility for 10.1.5. As i've jumped on the OS X bandwagon from System 9 only at 10.3.9 I am also not familiar with older programs. Sorry. There seems to be quite a few programs, including Onyx, for system 10.2 though so you will find lots more things when you upgrade in the future.
Best wishes,
Aydin

Hi Aydin
I went searching the web for some ideas. Read this one post about closing controls and extensions on Classic to boost performance. I followed what was written and when I restarted my computer there was no desk top. YIKES!!! So I packed my baby up and took it to a Mac tech. I now have a new Tiger operating system (G4). My printer options were no working properly so I decided to reinstall the software. How brave is that? Problem was it kept asking me for a password of which I had no clue. So believe it or not I actually had to reload the operating system in order to change my password. Bill Gates would be so proud of me.
Now that I'm upgraded and some what computer savy, do you think I should try Onyx or just leave well enough alone?

Well done! I would say leave well enough alone. Actually Onyx isn't available for Tiger yet but most users agree it is best to wait for it instead of using something else. It should be coming out very soon.
Best wishes,
Aydin
