TICKET ARCHIVE -> Terminal App Problem - Ls Command

Hello,

Just installed Tiger and am very impressed!

Only one problem so far, I use the Terminal app constantly and have found that the “ls” command does not work when I am logged on as me (i.e. non root user). Any combination of options with “ls” is giving me the same error:

David-Freys-Computer:/Users dfrey$ ls
ls: illegal option -- -
usage: ls [-ABCFGHLPRSTWZabcdefghiklmnopqrstuwx1] [file ...]

When I am logged on as root, I do NOT have this problem… Weird.

Tried changing the groups to which my user id belongs and have had no luck.

One other aspect worth mentioning is that I used the default install option off the DVD.

Any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated as this is one of the apps I am very reliant upon.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

David,

Sounds like the "ls" command is not just running ls. It appears to be receiving an option that may be coming from a bad alias or something.

Try running /bin/ls (i.e., give it the full pathname to the ls command) and see if you get different results.

Hello Charlie,

Thank you for the info. Turns out the upgrade inserted some odd alias info into my .bash_profile. Removed that line and all was right again.

Odd thing is, I upgraded another computer (Mac Mini 1.42Ghz on X.3.9) and did not have this issue at all...

Thanks again for your help,

David
