Hi John -
Do you still have access to the Panther install CDs? If so then you can recover the TextEdit application from there without a re-install or anything so involved. First off, there's a shareware application called "Pacifist" which can open and browse the .pkg files which contain all the system softwar etc. You can download version 1.6.3 from Version Tracker at this link:
http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/12743
Once you've downloaded this, insert Panther Install Disk number 1 and then run Pacifict. From the "File" menu select "Open Package" and in the file browser window select the following package file:
Mac OS X Install Disk 1/System/Installation/Packages/Essentials.pkg
In the Pacifist main window, you'll see a list of package contents. Open the "Applications" folder in this list and you'll see TextEdit near the end of the list - simply drag this to your /Applications folder on your hard drive and then sit back - it will take a few minutes for Pacifist to unpack and locate the TextEdit app. for you.
One thing to note, if there's any problems running TextEdit after this it may be a problem with your preferences file. If there is a problem, try removing com.apple.TextEdit.plist from the Library/Preferences folder within your home directory.
I hope this helps, and thanks for choosing macosx.com!
