TICKET ARCHIVE -> Tiger Is Crawling

I have read other's questions here about Tiger. I have an iBook G3 with firewire. I installed Tiger and it crawls. Can't do anything in Mail without the dreaded beachball for every click. I have checked the pages in and out with Activity Monitor and it's only in the 20,000 range. The iBook has 384 MB Ram.

I also tried to install on a B&W G3 and it failed. Currently it's in the shop because now it won't boot even with the Panther boot CD. The B&W G3 has a Sonnet Encore Zif G4 700 accelerator, over 800 mb ram, a second IDE 80 Gig drive (plus the 8 Gig scsi drive that came with it), and is soon getting a new video card (ATI Radeon 9200). I purchased the family edition of Tiger and successfully installed on my daughter's iBook 14" 1.3 GHz, but found out Apple wants $10 for the CD to install on my G3. So mad I could spit. I wasted my money I guess, trying to be a good Mac citizen.

Please advise on my two problems. All this for spotlight and wigits.

Hi Jennifer,

Is your iBook a square white one or an original fruity color one? Tiger probably won't work every well if you have less anything slower than a G3 500. It also is a big memory hog, so 512MB+ is almost necessary. My powerbook with 1G ram still struggle sometimes. If you have an original iBook, I think Panther is the way to go. The reason your iBook is so unresponsive is probably because Spotlight is indexing your drive. After installing Tiger you should leave the computer alone for a couple of hours and let Spotlight do its thing. If you've done that and it's still really slow, then perhaps the iBook is simply too slow to handle Tiger.

Beige G3 isn't officially supported by Tiger. There is a way to go around it (http://www.opendarwin.org/projects/XPostFacto/), and with your G4 upgrade it might very well work at acceptable speed. However, to avoid disappointments like this in the future, I suggest that you read system requirements before you purchase new software, especially since your hardwares are a few generations old.

Let me know if you have more questions.

Charlie

My iBook is the square white one. My G3 is a B&W with all the upgrades. I think I will stay with Panther on the B&W but I really wanted to have Tiger on the iBook. It only has a 20 GB drive so I'm inclined to get a larger drive. I have an external firewire drive, but it's not really portable, which is the whole idea with an iBook. I'm reluctant to put more money in the iBook since it seems there's just one thing after another on the G3 B&W. All my money on new CPUs have gone into the college daughter's gear. So I'll have to wait awhile for my own. I guess I have to give up on Toger at home. I will be writing Apple an angry letter here. I thought I DID read all the write ups about Tiger. They even say it's supported on a B&W G3...

How do I go back to Panther on my laptop. I did an archive and install when I installed Tiger. Can I just "bless" the archived folder somehow?

Hi Jennifer,

I agree with you that you're probably better off waiting a little longer and get a new Mac Mini or iBook, which might be revised as soon as next week. When you purchase a new Mac, max out the memory, it'll be worth it in the long run.

You can un"archive and install" a OS X installation. The archive is not a complete backup of your system folder. You will need to archive and install Panther.

Cheers,

Charlie

Thanks for your input. Have to get on with it, eh? I will wait until the next free 1/2 day to reinstall Panther. What a bother. Anyway, I appreciate that you took the time to respond.
