I get the error popup three times in a row before Classic finally loads:
"The server may not exist or it is not operational at this time. Check the server name or IP address and try again."
I've tried many things (e.g, moving the Preference folder to the Desktop and starting up with extensions off, among others) and have searched the net for help, but nothing works. Any ideas?

Did you have Mac OS 9 set up to connect to three remote computers during its startup?, so they'd be available when it finished.

No.
And I had been using OS 9.1 on the G3 tower that I copied my files from. On my new iMac G5, I booted Classic from the OS 9.2.2 system, only because that's what Tiger insisted on.
I find it hard to believe that my imported settings are what are causing the problem, although reason would tell me they must be; I notice that other Tiger users I googled on the net have also complained, without finding a solution, about the same error popup repeatedly occurring when they try to start Classic.
There's got to be silver bullet. What is it?

So, there's a thread on MacFixIt Forums you might have noticed.

Jerrald thinks he found the solution: an alias to Instant Access OCR that gave the error whether or not Classic was running. Perhaps this is not the same alias for everyone but the problem could be related to stray aliases that no longer point anywhere.

Thanks for your help. I had already seen all those suggestions, but they were too specific to the particular characteristics of the suggesters.
I am delighted to report that I finally cured the problem: I deleted every alias in the OS 9.2.2 folder I could find and the problem is now gone!
My solution took me hours to accomplish because I couldn't find a program that would find all the files in all the subfolders of a folder under the "alias" rubric. It seems a weakness of Spotlight not to allow "alias" as a kind. Am I missing something obvious? I tried "Others" as a kind, but that produced garbage.

When you select Others in the Kind popup, you get not only a box in which to enter a kind of file, but also a menu that drops down to show all kinds of files indexed on the computer. Alias is in the menu, and the entry box supports autocomplete of kinds listed there.
