Alex,
My name is Cheryl and I will be assisting you. When you install Toast, you need to disable a couple of Apple extensions.
Go to System Folder>Extensions. Now go to the view menu and select by list. This will put everything in alpha order. Now locate the following and drag them to your desktop.
Authoring support
Disc Burner Extension
USB Authoring support
Now close the extension folder and open the Extensions(disabled) folder. Drag those files you just placed on your desktop to this folder.
Close all the windows and restart the computer. Immediately hold down the option and the apple keys.
Continue to hold down those keys until you get a dialog box asking if you wish to do a desktop rebuild. This will come up after the extension icons load at the bottom of your screen.
When the dialog box comes up, release the keys and click on okay.
Give Toast a try.
If Toast does not respond, you will need to invest in the latest version of Toast. Toast 4 is really for OS 8 and older. Roxio does not support version 4 any more and has pulled the updates to that version. The latest version for OS 9 is Toast 5. You can get more information at:

hi Sheryl, Alex again.
i went into the extensions folder but none of the extensions you listed were there. There was a USB support but no Authoring support. this computer has never been set up for burning before. could this be effecting this? any other suggestions? thanks Alex

Alex,
First, you should update your OS. You state you are running 9.0.4. You shuld be at 9.1. Go to here:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=75288
Download the 9.1 update, then install it. You will need to restart the computer when the installation is done.
Next, double check the extensions. You need USB support. You do not need the authoring support.
Now give Toast a try.
What is the brand and model of the CD burner? I can double check to see what version of Toast supports it.
As I mentioned previously, Toast 4 is no longer supported for OS 9. You need to purchase Toast 5 if Toast 4 does not work on your computer.

Alex,
The basic version of Toast that will see your burn drive is 5.3.5.
You can find more information here:
http://www.roxio.com/en/products/toast5/index.jhtml
Toast 4 does not have all the components needed to see your burn drive. You will have to invest in the version 5 in order to use that drive.

thanks Cheryl for your advice on toast, but since upgrading to os9.1 when copying file to my usb flash drive its saying that file sharing cant be turned on and i cant remove the flash drive because 'it contains items that are in use' even though i haven't copied anything!? very annoying

Alex,
First, go to the System Folder>Preferences. Locate and trash the File Sharing Prefs. file. Close the windows.
Restart the computer and immediately hold down the option and the apple keys. Continue to hold them down until you get a dialog box asking if you wish to do a desktop rebuild. Release the keys, then click on the okay button.
When done, empty the trash. Now go to the Apple menu>Control Panels. Open the File Sharing Control Panel and make sure it is off.
Now give your USB flash drive a try.
