Steve,
My name is Cheryl and I will be assisting you, but I need more information.
What OS X version are you using?
Is your CD burner an external one or a SuperDrive that was installed on many Mac models.

Steve,
OS X is pretty sensitive to third party devices. What you will need is a third party burning program for OS X. There are a couple to select from, but the trick is to find one that will work with your system.
Were you ever able to burn a CD in OS X? If so, then all that is needed is to trash the preference file of Toast Lite. That is in Home>Library>Preferences and the file is: com.roxio.toast.plist.
Once you have trashed that file, empty the trash, then give Toast Lite a try.
You should be able to find it in Applications [not the file named Applications (Mac OS 9)].
If you do not have Toast Lite installed for OS X, then you will need to get Roxio's Toast 6 Titanium.
There are some shareware and freeware programs, but I do not know how well they work. You might want to try them, though.

Disk Blaze

Note - for the older OS X version you will need to download version 3 which is at the very bottom of the web page.

ok the OS x will not let me open up any of the cd drives. So how do i go about that? Yes i was able to burn Cd's before but now i cant. I also cant get anything to print off of the OS x. If it does not work i need to bring it somewhere to get looked at and I'm wondering how much something like that would cost

Steve,
Before you pack up the computer, there is one more thing to try. I am going with the fact that you said you are running the first OS X - 10.0. If my assumption is wrong let me know.
Start up in OS 9 and go to the Hard drive. You should have two system folders.
One with a 9 on the folder icon labeled System Folder
One with a X on the folder icon labeled System
You should also have a folder labeled Users. Move the Users folder to the Documents folder. This is for safe keeping.
Move the Library folder to the Documents folder. You may need a few things from that folder.
Move the Applications folder (the one With Out (Mac OS 9 in the name) to the Documents folder.
Drag to the trash:
System
ISP
LEC
Master
and empty the trash
Now insert the OS X CD and restart the computer - holding down the C key to start up with the CD.
Now you can install OS X. This will give you a fresh new System.
When done, restart and follow the prompts of the assistant if it comes up.
Now all you need to do is move the items from your User folder to the correct places. Move only the Non Apple preference files of the programs you use.
You can trash that Users folder that you saved in Documents when you are done.
Now compare the Library folder you saved in Documents to the Library folder on the hard drive. In particular - check Applicatin Support, Fonts, Mail and Receipts.
Now compare the Applications folder you saved to the new one. You can just drag and drop the programs that are Non Apple to the new folder.
Now check the CD drives and see if they are in working order.
The new install should have also installed printer drivers, but you will need to add the printer.
Let me know if this works. I know this may take some time, but my thinking is that there is a corrupt file within the system that is causing you the trouble. This is the easiest way to do a reinstall with a fresh system.
