Hi

I recently got a mac-G3 from my friend and this is the first time I'm using mac so I have zero knowledge in this field. Anyway my problem is that I know that the network is working because I can ssh, telnet and ftp to other computer, but I can't used internet explorer or safari, very time I click on safari or explorer its says 'the specific server can not be found'. I did double check the proxy, IP and so on.

A very silly question the icon network is grey, what does that mean (I thought that its supposed to be blue!)

My friend says that safari should work fine????
please help me

thanks

Sure you can telnet to another computer on your internal network, but from the sound of things you are not connected to the Internet.

Also the Network I con is supposed to be Blue, generally if it is grey you are probably not set up correctly, so I will need some info here.

Fisrt of all exactly what Mac are you using and what OS are you running. 9,2, 10,1, 10.2 Etc.

It would really help if you could alunch the System profiler in the utilities folder, and when it has finished running go to the file menu and save the file as an XML and email it to me at stuartpa@osx.com. This will laet me see how your system is set up etc.

If yo uare connnected to the Internet what is your connection and how do you achieve it via a PC or a Mac (PC right).
What is your internal netword, Ethernet, WI FI, USB etc.

Are you using any VPN systems.

Sorry it has obviously taken a while to get to your question, but if you wish we can take a look at your situation now.

Hi Stuarta,

I'm very sorry for the late reply (I have been sick the whole week), anyway I'm very happy to receive your response. I hope that the answer for your question is right:

1. I'm using Macintosh PowerBook G3 and running Mac OS X 9 as start-up system.
2. I don't know if the internet is via PC or Mac, but I think that its PC, because in the System Preferences-Internet and Network the .Mac icon is blue but the Network icon is grey.
3. At uni I'm using Ethernet, but at home I'm using phoneline
4. I don't know what is VPN system so?????

Sorry, if I'm not much help, however please find the 'System profiler' attached.

I very much wish to sort out the problem with the internet as soon as possible.

Thanks

HI OK I think that you cannot sendd the System Profiler ina message to the board directly, so the best way would be to send me the message directly to stuarta@macosx.com, that should come directly to me here. IF that does not work, I will have to figure another way to get it here, I havbe done it before so it shoud not be difficult OK.

HI, yet again, there is something really odd going on here because you cannot get to the system prefernces file if you are booting in OS 9
1. I'm using Macintosh PowerBook G3 and running Mac OS X 9 as start-up system.

Also the Network system preference and the system profiler are pretty much OS X only as well, so none of this info really makes any sense.
2. I don't know if the internet is via PC or Mac, but I think that its PC, because in the System Preferences-Internet and Network the .Mac icon is blue but the Network icon is grey.

THe only way I can see that your running OS9 is that you start up in OS X, then startup Classic mode probably automatically.

If you have an applications that launches you into the Classic mode, it will look as if you are in OS 9 but in reality you will be in OS X, running OS 9 as classic.

To check this if you are in OS 9 you can go to the control panels which are the OS 9 version of the system preferences. In the control panels, check out the startup disk, and see if you are starting up on a drive that has both X and 9 on it.
See which one is selected.

Now it is decision time, you need to decide if you need to startup in OS9 by itself, or OSX first then have X startup OS9 in what is known as Classic mode.

IF this thread gets dropped let me know and I will ask one of the guys here how I can get your message back onto this system, or we can continue this via my Email at Macosx.com OK.

VPN is a Virtual Private Network and by the sound of your reply you are definitley not using it. It is a specialized method of communications used across the Internet that is a Virtual Network and you need a special Network setup to access one.

Now as to the colours of the icons in the System preferences panels, the Nework Icon is grey and the .Mac is Blue and they do not change colour at all. So the colours you have for these icons is OK and ypou can open them.

One of the first things you will need to ensure is that you have your DNS numbers entered in the TCP/IP part of the Ethernet connection. IF you can't find an ethernet connection then you have not deined one so we willo have to do this for you to access the Internet in the first place.

I think if you can Telnet across your own Network but can't get at the Internet, then we need thos number putting in the correct place in the TCP/IP part of the Network control panel. You should be able ot find these numbers on your PC where you setup the network for either Dial UP settings or in the Settings control panels, Network;
The numbers look like these.
192.168.123.45
192.168.123.3
YOur numbers may be totally different to these but this is how they are laid out nad if you don't know your DNS numbers your Internet service provider will give you them, or they will be available from their web site.

Let me know the results for the Os you are actually using and if you can access the Ethernet Network system preference OK.

Hi Nguyen, I got your printouts, took a bit of reading but I got no clues there.

The thing that is bothering me is the fact that you seem to think that the .mac system preference being blue and the Network icon being grey is a problem. It isn't it is just the way Apple colour those icons.

So what I am wondering is how you have your network set up.

Go to the system preference newrok panel and see if you have it set up for your ISP.

Are you on a DSL, or dial up (PPP) depending on how these are set up can radically effect ow your network is going ot funtions.

When you are telnetting or ftp ing are you going to a system on your own network or one on the Internet?
I have a feeling it is the network panel that needs setting up, either that or the sharing control panel.

So if you can do the same thing send me some screen shots of your network control panel and some of hte Sharing one, we will start once again from there OK.

Another thing are you actually starting on OS 9 or OS X then going to 9. This is really important as the way everything is set up is totally different between 9 and X.

You can start up in X and switch to 9 and you have to change everything under the X system preferences.

If you are boot from 9 only then you may need to translate what i have said here from x to 9. They are essentially the same but in 9 system preferences are called control panels.

The setting for the Internet access are done either by usingthe Internet control panel or by using the Remote access control panel. Both these control panels give you access to all the other control panels you need access to by making sure that you have the Advanced User checked. Unless you have set one, no password is usually needed.

I noted that although you sent me picture of the system profiler, they came from an OS X system, but you state inthe beginning of your question you are booting in 9.

I really need to know exactly which OS you are really using.

X is a whole lot better for networking that 9, but if you have a lot of 9 software you will want to be in 9 not 10.

I have a totally separate drive that boots in 9 for some of my music stuff and a totally different drive that is for X for all the Music stuff as it got updated and I caould afford to replace it. Took a while befoe I quit using 9.

SO fill me in on exactly which OS you want to use and we wil lwork it out from there.

I am going to need to have you DNS numbers available from your ISP and the Phone Number you need to access them, unless you are using DSL. You still need the DNS Numbers, but you might be using PPOE, which is basicaly the old PPP system except it is over the Ethernet to the Box your Phone company supplied.
