Problem: After installing the 10.4.2 upgrade I am no longer able to reboot into OS 9. Attempts to do so show the folder-question mark icon and then it boots up OS X. I can use the Startup Disk preference pane to select the OS 9 system folder, but rebooting still fails. I can run Classic using the 9.2.2 system folder, but cannot boot from it. The 9.2.2 system folder does have the correct icon indicating that it is a blessed folder. In order to run the majority of my children's software properly I need to be able to boot into OS 9. Classic is not sufficient for my needs. This problem was introduced with the 10.4.2 upgrade.
I am hoping that I am not alone in seeing this and it is a bug in 10.4.2 and not that the upgrade has somehow corrupted my OS 9 system folder (although I do not know why it would work in Classic if that were the case.)
Machine description:
B&W G3 350 MHz. OS 9.2.2 installed on 6 GB original primary drive. OS X installed on 16 GB secondary drive. Because OS 9 and OS X are on separate drives the "hold down 9 while booting" option has never worked, instead to boot into OS 9 I either have the Startup Disk preference set to boot off of OS 9 or I hold down the D key which forces a boot off of the primary drive (which only has OS 9.2.2 on it.)

Update:
I decided to attempt to reinstall OS X 10.4 but the system would not let me. So I reinstalled Panther 10.3. The install went ok, but when I tried to login it said my password was incorrect. I tried the passwords for all of the accounts and none of them worked. The hints displayed were correct, but the passwords were not. So I used the Reset Password option in the install disk and reset my password to the same thing. After that I was able to login to 10.3. I also used the Install Disk to set the Startup Disk to my OS 9.2.2 folder and it rebooted into OS 9 just fine. This makes it clear to me that the OS 9.2.2 folder was not in any way corrupted.
I've since upgraded the system to 10.3.9 and it is still working fine. I am hesitant to reinstall Tiger and 10.4.2 though since I expect it will break my ability to boot into OS 9 again.

Howdy! Here's another post on this site:

Look like you can no longer boot up in OS 9 on the Tiger OS. This has been planned for quite some time…

I don't believe this addresses the issue. Apple has long planned to phase out the ability for machines to dual-boot, and the hardware changes they have made have ensured this. But as far as I know they never announced that Tiger was going to intentional break that ability in older machines. I think this is a potential bug in Tiger 10.4.2. If other people have successfully installed Tiger 10.4.2 and can still successfully reboot into Mac OS 9, assuming they could do so with 10.4.1, then I would like to know about that.

I've given you what I know and Apple "announced" doing away with OS 9 when they rolled out the first OS X, they just said it would take a long time.
I'll put this back in the queue and see if someone else knows more.

Hi Brendan
Tiger won't disable booting into OS 9 on your machine.
Sounds like the OS 9 system may be nessed up. It should still boot fine in Tiger.
I would delete the OS 9 System Folder and try reinstalling OS 9.

It seems unlikely to me that the OS 9 system folder was corrupted in some way. If it were then Classic would probably be affected. And moreso, if it were then it would remain so after reinstalling Panther, but under 10.3.9 it is working normally. I'm planning on installing 10.4.1 tonight and I'm guessing rebooting into OS 9 will be fine. But I think I'm going to hold off on upgrading to 10.4.2 until I know that someone using a machine similar to mine has installed 10.4.2 and can still reboot into OS9. Reinstalling OS9 from scratch on the machine would be a last resort. Thanks for the suggestion though.

Booting into OS 9 worked fine on my machine with 10.4.1. It stopped working after upgrading to 10.4.2. Having reinstalled 10.3.9 it is working fine again. I am interested in knowing if rebooting into OS 9 continues to work AFTER you upgrade to 10.4.2. It didn't for me.

Strange.
I've searched Apple docs and the boards and haven't seen a problem like this with 10.4.2. If this were a common problem, a lot of people would be complaining about it.
I haven't updated to 10.4.2 because of the numerous reports about problems on some boards and MacFixit.

It may be an uncommon problem. So far though no one has responded here that after upgarding to 10.4.2 they can still reboot into OS 9. Maybe there aren't that many people rebooting into OS 9 anymore. Or maybe it has something to do with my having OS 9 on one drive and OS X on the other, which may not be common.

That's possible, but I think a lot of people still use 9 occassionally.
If this were a problem for 10.4.2 users, I think Apple's boards, as well as our own forum would have a number of posts about it.
Like I said, I haven't gone to 10.4.2, staying with 10.4.1 for awhile because of problems I've seen reported. But I do have OS 9 on a different drive and no problems booting from it with 10.4.1.

I'll post this on Apple's boards and see what response I get there.
Thanks.
