KNOWLEDGE LEVEL: Intermediate

PROBLEM: Combination
COMPUTER TYPE: Midwest micro
MODEL: Pentium 100 with Evergreen upgrade
RAM: 65+
OS VERSION: Windows 98
SERVICE PACK: Buld 4.10.1998

DESCRIPTION:

When starting, Win 98 finds "Unknown hardware" and then proceeds to look for "device driver for unknown hardware". Problem appeared to first develop after installing MS Personal Web Manager. Perhaps related?-----computer attempts automatic sign on to ISP 7 times every time it starts up. Number of attempts never varies. No unusual load or run statement in ini.files that I can uncover.

Hi William...Welcome to No Wonder.

Have a look in Control Panel -> System...Device Manager for the 'Unknown Hardware' that Windows is detecting.

Have you looked in your Start Up group (Start Menu -> Programs -> Startup) to see if your DUN (Dial-Up Networking aka ISP Connection) loads there. If not, check the Registry. Run Regedit.exe in your Windows folder and check these keys for a reference to your ISP:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunServic es
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunServic esOnce

If you find a reference, you can delete it. Double check to make sure you are deleting the reference, not the key itself.

If you have *any* questions about this, please let me know.

Hope this helps,
Pete
