It has been several months now since I accepted a prompt to update certain features (security, iTunes, Safari etc) only to find that most of my applications would no longer respond. I asked for advice here and I was grateful to receive it and after repairing discs with disc utility, everything was up and running again. I was however reluctant to accept any futher updates from Apple.
Only when I consulted OTHER mac users (who had suffered a similar experience accepting updates) that had assured me that everything seemed to be working fine now and no apparent problems had been observed, did I finally (yesterday) decide to accept the latest updates.
BIG MISTAKE!!! Applications like Safari, mail, iTunes, msn, skype etc..REFUSED to launch, their icons merely bouncing once or twice in the dock.
Well at least I was now armed with the knowledge of how to repair discs and wasted no time in inserting my installation discs, holding down C and navigating to disc utility/repair discs. AND IT WORKED!!! That is all apart from iTunes. My Tiger OSX on the disc is 10.4.(22) and my iTunes will not open with anything less than OSX 10.4.9
No probs, I'll download directly from Apple a more recent version. Except I can't open it.. Four times now I have downloaded 10.5.4 and I can not get it to install. Any ideas???? Also my imac G5 (same unit) can no longer see my external hard drive (iomega). I doubt I'll ever accept an update ever again.
Check under your Apple menu (About this Mac) for the system version that you have right now. If it is 10.4.x, then that's the reason the 10.5.4 update does nothing. You must upgrade your system to 10.5 first, before 10.5.4 will install, and that's some software that you must purchase.
The more recent version that will work best for you is the 10.4.11 combined updater. Download directly from here -
http://www.apple.com/support/downloa...updateppc.html
That combined updater is a good one to keep around, until you upgrade to 10.5.
Don't be afraid of letting updates install. You may have had problems in the past, but that's actually uncommon! I always encourage people to get the updates. One tip that I can offer that may help you - is the restart your mac immediately before you try to install any update, especially any of the major updates, such as the combined updater that you should download now.
After you install the update for 10.4.11, you will be able to use your iTunes again!
