KNOWLEDGE LEVEL: Intermediate

PROBLEM: Hardware
COMPUTER TYPE: ibm aptiva
MODEL: pentium 133
RAM: 65+
OS VERSION: Windows 95
SERVICE PACK: have no idea

DESCRIPTION:

i want to upgrade my pentium to the mmx 200mhz. and after i put it in i kept getting error code 127 which is processor speed error. my manual says to turn the computer off, wait 10 seconds, and then turn the computer on again. i did all of this and i will still get the same error. i was wondering if i can upgrade my pentium or not. i have been told that i can and that i cannot. i called the place that i bought it (best buy) and he told me he couldnt help me over the phone. i heard about you from our yahoo! subscription and thought that it wouldnt hurt to ask you. if i can upgrade i will but if i cant i will return the pentium. also at the same time we got and put in 128 meg of ram sucessfully. thank you for your time.

Hi Bob.

Chances are that you CAN upgrade your computer, but you gotta do a little bit of research. There is a good chance that your computer doesn't recognize the 200mhz correctly since after all when the 133mhz processor was manufactured (yours) 200mhz didn't exist. Sometimes you gotta change some jumpers or similar on your board. I can't tell you exactly what to chance since it's board/system is different. Take a look at the manuals that came with your computer. There should be a section somewhere about upgrading your processor. It will probably tell you which, if any, jumpters you need to change.

Good luck!
