KNOWLEDGE LEVEL: Intermediate

PROBLEM: No Problem
COMPUTER TYPE: Compaq
MODEL: Pressario CDS 720
RAM: 48meg
OS VERSION: Windows 3.11
SERVICE PACK:

DESCRIPTION:

I would like to upgrade my Compaq Presario CDS 720, cheaply. I don't need to run Windows 95, but I would like to add a math coprocessor at least. Would you advise me which is a good way to go? I've seen some upgrades for SX computers like mine for under $50.00. My computer is a 1994 model and I don't want to put a lot of money in it since I will probably replace it in a year or so.

Details: Compaq 486SX
Memory 640K, 15360K Ext, 43592, XMS
Video, XGA, Cirrus

Let me know if I should provide further information.

Thanks! EF Banfill

Hi EF,

welcome to our techboard.

Upgrading ? ...

You have 2 possibilities :

a) you are using your pc for "office applications" (word-processing / spreadsheet /...) only. Then this upgrade could a nice idea.
b) You want to play the latest games : consider buying a new one now.

You can upgrade by buying a new chip (486dx) or an overdrive processor. Mind in first case you are limited by the socket type on your motherboard, in second case you need to buy an overdrive matching your current configuration.
$ 50 sounds resonable, depending on what you get
For Win95 the least you should consider is a 486DX-4 100 mhz.

Always remember that the speed of your computer is set by a combination of all parts. Not only your processor! When upgrading you should also bare in mind that the rest of your system (motherboard, videocard, ...) are also outdated.
