I am working on a PowerPC G3 desktop. I have upgraded the memory to a total of 320mb. I am looking to upgrade to the OS X, however hard drive space is a concern. Is it possible to add an external drive to run the OS only? If so, can you direct me to information on how to proceed? Thank you for your help!

Hi Jenny,
320MB is probably acceptable for Panther, but I wouldn't try with Tiger. Using an external hard drive is an option only if your PowerMac has built-in Firewire. If you're not sure, go to
www.everymac.com and identify your model; I'll be able to help you then.
Cheers,
Charlie

OK. I am working w/The Apple Power Macintosh G3/266 DT which apparently does not have built-in firewire, but does have the cards avialable. Will that do?

Hi Jenny,
That would complicate things considerably. Since both Panther and Tiger require built-in Firewire to install, and you can only boot from external hard drives connected via built-in Firewire, it would require a substantial amount of trial-and-error and some 3rd party hacks to make Panther or Tiger work on your PowerMac.
You can, however, install Jaguar on your Mac provided that you have enough hard drive space. If you do a custom install of Jaguar (minus various languages, printer drivers, etc), you should only need 1.5G or so. So if you have more than 3GB of space left I'd say it's okay.
Let me know if you need more information.
