DESCRIPTION:
I'm trying to upgrade my sons computer from windows 3.11 .
I keep getting an error reading saying
"Warning SU0168: Your computer already has an operating system installed which cannot be upgraded by this version of setup, please obtain the windows95 upgrade."
I'm using the windows95 disk i have from my computer & in the book i have with it shows how to install it if your upgrading from a previous version of windows. Is there an actual disk especially for upgrading from Win3.11 ?? It tells me to go to FILE MANAGER then RUN then type in D:\win95\setup , it goes through the setup & then gives me the error reading. Any advice would be much appreciated.
TIA , sincerely Leslie Allen
Hello and welcome to No Wonder!
There are a couple of Win95 versions depending on what user is targeted.
The books are the same and covers all options. The type of the kit is stated on the Windows95 blue box.
In your case you need the "upgrade" version of Win95.
Before doing anything, please do a complete back-up of your system.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
A. THE HARD WAY, I don't recommend it if you want to keep your old programs
------------------------------------------------------------------------
1. Delete the entire Windows 3.11 directory from the computer you want upgraded, and any reference to Windows from "autoexec.bat" and "config.sys".
You will loose all and any applications which ran from Win3.11.
2. Install Windows95 from the beginning . It should work smoothly.
3. Reinstall all your applications (like office, etc.).
Done.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
B. THE EASY WAY
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
1. Find the "upgrade" version of Windows95.
2. Install it from File Manager with "D:\setup" or "D:\win95\setup".
Done.
Note:
a. Check in advance your free hard disk space.
b. Even that Microsoft claims Windows95 runs on your computer you may wish to revert the upgrade. This is possible if you kept the older files when the setup program is asking that.
However, I recommend NOT to upgrade to Windows95 on this computer because of performance lack.
If it works OK don't change it.
If you have any further questions please do not hesitate to come back.
Good luck,
