Is there a driver available for a CompUSA 56K USB External Data/Fax V.92 Modem? I received one as a gift and would like to use it with my daughter's iMac DV (400Mhz Blueberry) running OS X v. 10.3.7. Alternatively, is a custom modem configuration possible within System Preference's network panel?

Hello,
Thank you for choosing macosx.com. My name is Adam and I will be helping you.

It doesn't seem like there are any for OS X (or OS 9) but, why aren't you using the built in modem?

Hi Adam:

This is my first try here and to say the least, I'm really impressed with your prompt reply, especially at 6:10 AM. For me those are ETA's or better yet sleep time. Thnx for your concern.

As to why I'm not using the built in modem, it seems to have gone kaput during shipment from San Juan, Puerto Rico to Tampa, FL. It was working when it left our Island of Enchantment but I haven't been able to even get a dial tone while in Tampa. Then again, the machine is about 5 years old now, although still going strong and unbelievable as it may seem, running OS X v. 10.3.7 without a hitch.

I shopped for an OS X compatible modem in Tampa but found none and I tried CompUSA, a local Mac store and even the Apple Store. Pending your reply I'll mail order for one, probably a BestData which have always worked for me since the 2400 and my old Mac SE.

Again, thanx for your reply and keep up the grat work.

Best regards,

Ruben

Well, why don't we try getting you built-in modem working so you don't have to spend money?

what i would like you to do is go to the Apple Menu, Select "About This Mac", and click on "More Info..." at the bottom of the screen that pops up.

once the System Profiler opens up, i want you (on the right side) to click on Modems under the Hardware menu.

and just copy and paste all the info thats in there and send me a reply

I thought about that initially but the machine is old and just having it serviced to determine whether the internal modem is shot costs $50 plus the cost of the replacement internal modem ($$$). Given that these days external modems are kind of dirt cheap (a good BestData Mac modem goes for around $50), I'd say that is the best way to go.

As to the settings from System Profiler you request, I'm in Puerto Rico now and the iMac is in Tampa. As soon as I get the settings I'll forward them to you.

In the meantime, thanx for your time and comments.

Best regards,

Ruben
