TICKET ARCHIVE -> Usb Hub Problem

Okay, so I have 2 external 120gb harddrives linked to my new D-Link USB hub and one is formatted under NTFS and the other Mac OS.

My problem is that when both are connected to the hub only the NTFS formatted drive appears, and when I hook up only the Mac OS drive it doesn't appear at all. However, when I link my Mac OS external drive directly to my Mac Mini it recognizes it immediately.

It's almost like my hub won't detect specifically that hard drive.

Can someone help me with this?

Thanks!

Sandy, welcome to macosx.com

Is you hub self powered, I mean, has it a electrical power supply or is it only powered by the mac usb port.

If the last one, this can (I say can) be a possible problem: both the drives may drain to much power from the port that one of them is not runing at all. In your case, as even if the MacOS is alone, it does not mount, I would say that this drive (perhaps an old model ?) is draining too much power the USB Hub electronic circuit can take into account (well, due to USB hub internal consumption, not all the mac's port power can be shared between the hub number of ports)
When directly plug into the mac, the mac's port can give enough power for it to run.

I would advice never using non self powered hub.

Now, if the hub is self powered, it is another problem

Philippe

Yes, it is a self powered hub.

Could connect other peripherals to the hub: printer, scanner, camera,.. ?
If these work right ?

I suppose your mac has more than one USB port, right ? Is is the same phenomenon for all the mac ports ?

Could you unpower the hub and test its two usb ports with the NTFS one only ?

Philippe,

Yes, i've tried every single configuration I can think of and nothing seems to work. However I have resolved the problem of data transfer by using my iPod as an external drive. The multiple transfers became fairly tedious but it's all done now.
