Mac dual 867 G4 with silver front

The USB ports quit working on my monitor. I zapped the PRAM and that did not help. I reset the PMU and the ports worked for 24 hours and then quit again. I reset the PMU again but it did not work this time. I reset the NVRAM using apple option OF but that did not do anything either. Meanwhile my computer is freezing regulary. The mouse quits working and the keyboard does nothing. If I unplug the mouse and replug it back in it still does not work. Neither does pluging the mouse into the USB ports on the back of the computer. I now just leave the mouse plugged into the back of the computer as my keyboard died and the new keyboard has no USB ports (Microsoft, but at least it works!) I have fixed permissions, I have deleted caches, I have tried logging in to a different account, starting a new user with administration privleges, and nothing seems to help, in fact it is getting worse. I now have nothing plugged into USB except the mouse and keyboard and It will often crash within seconds of login. Othertimes it will go for hours without a crash. I also have tried a different mouse, same problem.

In the last few days my modem has started acting up. It now will tell me that the other side is not responding or that their is a modem error and disconect me. After 4-5 log in attempts suddenly everything works fine. I tried putting in different modem scripts but that has done nothing. I also ran hardware test to check memory etc. It all came back fine. I reinstalled system software.

Any other suggestions?

Thank You

Scott,

You have done quit a bit of troubleshooting. Thank you for giving me all that information.
The one thing you do not mention is repairing the hard drive. The most easiest way is to start up in single user mode.

1. Shut down the computer if it is on.
2. Press the power button to start the computer.
3. Immediately press and hold the Command (Apple) key and the "s" key for single-user mode.
4. At the command-line prompt, type: /sbin/fsck -fy
5. Press Return.

The fsck utility will go through five "phases" then return information about the disk's utilization and fragmentation. Once the check is finished, if no issue is found, you should see "** The volume (name of volume) appears to be OK."

Note: If fsck alters, repairs, or fixes anything, it will display the message:

***** FILE SYSTEM WAS MODIFIED *****

Important: If this message appears, repeat the fsck command until it no longer appears. It's OK if you need to do several "passes" of fsck, because first-pass repairs may uncover additional issues.

When fsck reports that, "** The volume (name of volume) appears to be OK.",
6. type: reboot
7. Press Return.

Thank You Cheryl

I repaired the Hard Drive, the USB ports still do not work.

I forgot to mention that I have thought about overheating. It dosen't seem to matter. Sometimes it will crash after it has run for hours. but even if I shut it down overnight, I have had a crash within moments of first booting up in the morning. The other weird thing is that when the USB ports quit working on the monitor I bought a keyspan powered USB hub. after about a month it no longer works! I though maybe it just died because I get no power light even if it is not plugged into the computer, but the more I get into this the more I wonder if it is related?

Thanks

an update:

Since I repaired the Hard Drive this morning I have not had any crashes. (I had to use force quit on mail, but it didn't affect anything else and I reloaded mail without rebooting and have had no further problems.) This of course doesn't mean that this problem is fixed. It has gone hours without crashing before, but I thought this further info might be helpful.

Scott,

Do you shut down your machine every night? If so, the nightly routines are not running. Download Macaroni

http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/9633

Have it do the routines, then set it to do them when you start up the computer.

You will notice a different after two - three days.

Do those USB ports work? Can you remember when it stated to fail - if you installed anything just before that?

I've been using Onyx to run the scripts if I turn the computer off. Most nights I just leave it on all night, but I did start turning it off to check for overheating. (Does putting the computer to sleep keep the scripts from running?) Also, For informational purposes, could you explain what the different scripts do?

The USB Ports on my monitor still do not work. I am considering restting the PMU since that fixed it before. The system does seem stable now, I have had no more crashes since reparing the hard drive.

Let me know if you think the PMU reset is a good or bad idea and any other tricks that I might be able to use to convince my computer that the USB ports on the monitor are a good thing!

Thanks for your help

You asked when the USB Ports failed. It was several months ago. It first happened not long after I got the computer 3 years ago. I reset the PMU and that took care of it. This time it has been more problematical. I can't think of anything that I added. I tend to keep my machine fairly clean (I am a composer and use Logic Audio Gold and Sibelius. The only other apps I use are appleworks, Palm Desktop and Safari/Mail. USB is used (When my ports work!) for a lexmark x5150, a MIDISport usb midi 1x1 and a Tascam US-224. Also Logic requires a USB dongle or "xkey"

The one other event that occurred about the same time as the USB port problems on the monitor is the dreaded short short long flashing of the monitor power button with a dimming of the top inch or so of the screen. If I change resolutions or number of colors the screen works again but I still get the flashing light. Nothing that I have read links these two problems, but I am trying to be very thorough. (I did check all the pins on the DVI cable to make sure nothing is bent. They are fine.)

Scott,

Where do you have the USB cable from the monitor connected to? I am wondering if the problem is caused by the power adaptor for the display.

Check to make sure you have it plugged in to a good power source. If you have it connected to a surge protector, try a different surger or power source.

Turn off the display (you might want to shut down the computer for this) and unplug it. Let it rest for five minutes. Then plug it in, and give it a try.

You don't want to reset the PMU too many times. Let me know if the above works.

Thank You Cheryl,

I unplugged the monitor for about 10 minutes and the USB ports on the back of my monitor now work!

This is actually one of the 17" cinema LCD displays that have everything in one cord so there is not a separate power or USB line.

Thanks again

Cheryl,

Yes, The power light still flashes short, short, long. The top inch or so of my monitor is very slightly dimmed, but not enough so that i notice unless I really look for it. Sometimes the top inch will be noticeably dimmer but if I reset the screen resolution and then set it back it fixes it. An interesting anomaly, when the screen first turns on it is normal brightness and then it flashes and turns darker.

I also still have the modem occasionally disconnecting with a message of " the other side is not responding", or "an unexpected modem error has occurred". Finally, yesterday when I plugged the monitor back in, I was online when the whole computer froze.

Exception: EXC_BAD_ACCESS (0x0001)
Codes: KERN_INVALID_ADDRESS (0x0001) at 0x2f646995

I ran Onyx and repaired permissions when I rebooted and it has been fine since.

Thanks

Scott

Scott,

Double check the monitors connections to the computer and the power source. Make sure those cables are in snug.

Now go to System Preferences>Displays. Make sure colors is set to millions.
Click on detect displays so that the resolutions that come up are for your particular display. Select the highest one you possible can.
Click on color and then click on calibrate.
Follow the prompts to get the best view possible. Then save that calibration.

Let me know if that corrects the dim section.

Cheryl,

The picture on the monitor does seem better,

I am still having several crashes a day with the EXC_BAD ACCESS and KERN_INVALID_ADDRESS. I redid a clean system install this time with OSX 10.3 but am still having the problem. I am also still having the modem problems. Last night the system crashed and now the USB ports on the back of the monitor do not work (again) The only things I can think of would be a bad memory chip even thought it tested out fine with apple hardware test, or reformatting the hard drive (which I really don't want to have to do!). I am going to reset the monitor by unplugging it again for five minutes and pull the added 256 chip to see if it helps but if you have any other ideas. I am beyond desperate. I have several major projects that are overdue and getting further overdue every minute!

Thanks

Scott,

Kernel panics are usually caused by hardware. Do you have a second graphics card/monitor connection installed? Do you have a SCSI card installed, external speakers? Does this happen when you have the Midisport or the Tascam or the USB Xkey hooked up? Unplug them, and see if you still get kernel panics.

How large is the hard drive?
What programs are running when it crashes or comes up with a kernel panic?

What version of your audio programs are you using?
Logic Gold is 6.3.1
http://www.emagic.de/support/download/index.php?lang=EN

Sibelius is now updated to version 4
http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/14228

What exactly is happening with your modem? Check the cable that runs from the computer to your phone jack. You want the shortest route possible between the two. Also if the cable looks worn or old (discolored) you will need to replace it. Do you hear static on your phone line? Then you will need to call your phone company to check the line. It might need some adjustment outside your location.

It was all a memory problem. As soon as I removed the added memory all of my problems disappeared. This was a 256 meg chip added by the dealer when I bought the computer several years ago. It is labeled SpecTek and says there is a lifetime warranty. I suspect that there may have been problems with the chip for a long time as I have had minor crashing problems (really ever since I got the computer) Have you ever heard of this company and have any idea who I should contact about the warranty? Is it possible that this could have been causing my modem problems? They seem to have completely disappeared today as well! Thanks for all of your advice.

To help anyone else who might read this thread.

I do not have a second graphics card.
No SCSI cards
No Speakers
the crashes happened seemingly at random with just about any program I was using and whether I had any extra USB stuff plugged in or not.

The hard drive is 60 gigs of which I am currently using 10

I am using:
Logic 5.5
Sibelius 3.3
Appleworks 6
Safari
Palm Desktop
and Onyx (Highly recommended)

The modem cable is brand new as is the phone line, (We just finished building the house last month, these problems all started before we moved in)

The modem problems are documented above.

Thanks again

Scott Michal

Scott,

I am glad you found the culprit. And while it was a trial and error method, the good results are what is looked for.

As for the warranty, is the dealer still in business? Do you still have the receipt for the machine and additional memory installation?

I found what you need for the warranty details.

Oh well.

Removing the memory chip improved things temporarily.

I do not seem to gbe getting kernal panics anymore, but I am suffering from random freezes. Console is not giving me a lot of information. I have gotten the following message under mail several times. but it doesn't line up with when the crashes occure.

The most disturbing crash was when I was running disk utility from the CD

It seems that crashing when booted from the CD would indicate a hardware problem, but I ran hardware test again and everything checked out.

I downloaded hardware monitor.

The only sensors my computer has are for temp

the cpu is running 130-133 degrees farenheit and the harddrive is just under 100 degrees

When it crashes it just "freezes" with the mouse and keyboard nonresponsive and any moving things such as the clock or activity indicators freezing also.

I hope you can help

I am getting pretty discouraged

Scott,

Do not get discouraged. You did solve the kernel panics and the USB port problem (sort of).
Are you connected to a router or network?

Since you removed the 256 MB memory stick, how much memory do you now have on the computer? This could be causing the freezes and crashes.

I have had good luck with http://www.memory.com

Thanks Cheryl,

The computer seems to be running fine again. I disconnected every connector, the ram, the battery, the video board, the hard drive and CD-R. Cleaned everything and all the connectors and put it back together including the third party ram that I had previously removed, now cleaned and swapped to the other ram port with the factory ram. I booted up and ran disk utility from CD as well as repaired preferences. The preferences actually came back without needing anything changed for the first time ever. I turned off everything that I could think of or had read about, (expose set to defaults, automatically putting the computer {let alone the hard drive} to sleep, answering faxes. flurry screensaver, all USB stuff except keyboard and mouse. etc.) After 24 hours without any adverse results I put the computer to sleep overnight, No problems, I then plugged in a third party powered USB port and let it run for a couple of hours with only the mouse hooked up through it. That worked, so I have plugged the XS key from Logic in and that worked fine overnight with the computer sleeping. I will now slowly plug in things (the Lexmark x5150 printer is now hooked up and printing as I write) one by one with at least several hours in between. I will continue to report to you and let you know how it is going so maybe someone else might benefit from this. In my research I have run across discussion threads in several sites reporting bizarre shut downs and freeze ups. None of them that I have found has ever reached a real conclusion. They try things that seem to work for a while but then the problems return. There seems to be no common thread of apps used, network problems, USB stuff, though the Dual G4 Quicksilvers seem to be particularly suspect (though not unique). I haven't read of anyone with these problems trying this reconnection of everything. The thing that led me to this idea was that removing the ram helped for 24 hours, and everything tested out fine on hardware test but I stilled received intermittent hardware related problems.

By the way, the USB ports on my monitor do not work again. the reset by unplugging for 5 minutes solves it, but it quits working again within a couple of hours.

Well thanks again,

Scott

Scott,

Your third party powered USB hub --- when you say powered - do you mean self powered - with a power plug - that you are using? How many ports does it have?
The USB ports on the machine are USB 1 (as opposed to USB 2 which is faster). I believe the USB ports on the display are also USB 1.
Not all USB 2 devices will work on a USB 1 port.

How many USB devices do you have?

I think you are doing a great job of troubleshooting - since I am probably too far away from you to sit in front of your computer to troubleshoot.

Keep me posted on how you do.

Yes it is a self powered usb hub. It is USB 2.0 but it is compatible with 1.0 and I haven't had problems yet, (I think)

Scott,

Do you have an IntelliPoint mouse or other device?
What device did you connect when this started?
Do you use Classic (OS 9) ?

As I researched that error you were getting, it may be connected with your printer. That model is not supported in Classic.

I also read that it could be caused by another USB device or a firewire device.

While it seems that this problem is getting complicated, I think we are narrowing down the culprit.

I do not have classic installed on this computer

I did try to run the printer utility for the x5150 and it would not load. The computer did not crash but I also looked up and saw that the printer is not supported. I have had no problems with printing but the utility apparently is not compatible.

Shortly before the big crash I tried to uninstal the Intellipoint driver. I am using a microsoft keyboard, but an apple mouse so I figured I didn't need the mouse driver. I was reluctant to use the Microsoft keyboard but when My apple keyboard USB cable broke I was desperate and we do not have any stores that sell Apples within several hours. I have not had any problems with the microsoft keyboard as far as I can tell and I have had no crashes or any problems of any kind for the last 24 hours. I will not use the printer utility any more!

I think i can declare my computer fixed. i have had no problems since the crash on the 4th. i have searched thru all of the logs to see if anything weird is going on that hasn't caused a full blown crash. the only things i still have problems with are connection problems to our isp, but my wife is having the same problems with her computer, a windows laptop.

the one big problem, i suppose i can work around if i have to, but i am still very curious what is going on) is the original problem of the usb ports on my monitor. if i unplug the monitor for five minutes the ports work for a couple of hours and then shut off, even if i am away from my computer and not doing anything. here is the message i got which i think might be related;

aug 8 10:11:59 localhost kernel: 0 0 appleusbcdcecmdata: probe - provider doesn't want us to match

aug 8 10:11:59 localhost kernel: 0 0 appleusbcdcacmdata: probe - provider doesn't want us to match

i also found this kernal panic which i did not notice anything happen on the computer but i found under libray/logs/crashreporter in console

Scott,

Check real close at the pins on the connection cable to your monitor and the monitor port.
On the display cable if you see any bent pins, very carefully straighten them.

If there is any damage to the port on the back of the machine, you will need to get a replacement.

Does your display have firewire ports as well?
