Hi
I have a new laptop ibook G4. It works fine on wireless at work but when I brought it home today it was asking me for a WEP password. Where do I locate this?
I called the Cable company who services my wireless at home and they directed me to a settings page, but nothing is a password and even the stuff I did type in didn't work. Now what?

Sounds like you need to set up different "Locations" for your laptop to keep your wireless networks straight. when you're at work, go to apple menu/location/network preferences and create a WORK WIRELESS account.

Then, when you're home create a new account in the same way called HOME WIRELESS and make sure it's set up to pick up your home wireless signal. To find your WEP password at home you'll need to be able to access the router, usually you can do this using a web browswer on a computer connected directly to your router via ethernet.

who set up your home network? They'd have that WEP Password, as it's a very basic form of encryption, and the password of 7 characters is generated by the router and saved.

Let me know if this helps.

When you're on the web page, it should be connected to your router. If not, you won't be able to set or check your WEP password.

Most routers have an address like this: http://###.###.###.### that opens the router's admin page. There you'll be able to set or change the WEP Password. There's a "generate" button there and you have to enter a word and it then translates that word into the six digit WEP code.

Thanks again for your response. I found the page and the generate button. It seems to change a series of "KEY" codes with letters and numbers. Are those the passwords? If so, which one do I use?

Use can use any of them, but I usually just choose the first one, write it down (not on your computers) and then set up your wireless "location" with this password to access your home wireless network.

Should work then. Let me know.

Oh, and make sure you have your firewall on on your laptop and turn on security options on your router. If you don't, anyone will be able to use your internet for free. You dont' want that.

You are a great responder. I have a feeling I will be asking you a lot of stuff in the coming days.
I tired using one of the keys...it worked!!! Then I tired using it on an older laptop, A Powerbook G4, which also contains an airport. It too asked for a password. This time NONE the the KEYS worked. HMMMM...
I noticed that it only has OS 9.1. IS the use of the password only a MAC OS X thing?

Thanks agaiin for taking the time to answer this stuff.

You have to set up the older laptop with a "location" as well. It won't automatically be able to see your airport (though it might!) As long as you've set up your old powerbook like your other laptop, you should be good.

So which one only has 9.1?

And thanks for the compliment, by the way!

Hi again,

To answer your question the old laptop has 9.1 on it.
How do I set up locations again? Forgive the ignorance.I teach English, but I hope to get the hang of this stuff eventually.

Setting up the laptop for 9.1 is more complicated so I have to do some research. Might need a day or two to get this done…

Hi Nathaniel,

I was very hopeful but it is still asking for the Network password and none of them seem to work. I am going to call the Wireless provider and see what is up.

You have been great. I just don't GET what this magical password is!!

Remember you have to set up your router connection (or at least review it) on the new laptop using your web browser. Use that http://xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx address you used to get into your router the first time.

Make sure your airport card is on if you are attempting to connect. Otherwise, just connect to your router via ethernet cable.

Follow the instructions I sent you--it's the same in OS 9 as in OS X, you just have to enter it in TCP/IP in OS 9.

Your router's already set up, you need to teach your OS 9 laptop to communicate with it.
