TICKET ARCHIVE -> Western Digital Hard Drive In External Acomdata Enclosure Won't Mount With Firewire 400 Under 10.3.9

Hi I tried everything that Cheryl recommend to someone else ("Mac Won't Read External Firewire Hard Drive"). I run the FireWireUpdater470 ... the hard drive won't even show up in the Initio FireWire devices window.

System Profiler recognizes a FireWire device at 400 . When I connect iSight to the 2nd Fiewire connection behind the Acomdata external case, iSight works.

The USB 2.0 connection from the external case work (my drive mounts).

But I need it to run from Firewire!! What can I do??

I cannot find the Cheryl thread, so perhaps do you try the following trip:

Unplug the external drive from the Mac FW port
Unplug the Mac and the drive from the electrical outlet and let them like this for half an hour
Reconnect the mac to the electrical outlet, reboot it, reconnect the drive to the Mac FW port, reconnect it to the electrical outlet then power it.
Result ?

Do you hear the drive spinning ?

When you connect the iSight to the 1st FW connection at the rear of the external case (the one I suppose you use to connect the drive to Mac)..and the drive to the Mac through the second FW port at the rear of the case..., does the iSight/drive works ?

If the USB 2.0 works, we can imagine a defective FW bridge inside the case !
Why do you absolutely want FW ...if the USB works ?

Yes I did the first things that you recommended. I also reset the PRAM / NVRAM using OPEN FIRMWARE. I Left the computer, unplugged a few hours with the logic board battery removed and pessed the little button iside for 30'...etc...
System profiler recognizes a FW device but cannot recognize the disk. When I plug iSight on the 2nd FW connector of the hard drive ext case, iSight works.
I tried to run the latest version of FW Updater...the drive won't display so I can't update the firmware.
USB2 works but is not an option for computers that have USB1 only and FW. In this case I need FW!!
Is there anyway I can update the firmware through USB2??

(1) I would like you to test my suggestion, i.e. permutting the FW connection at the rear of the case:

(2) I have to check on the WD site to see if the firmware can be updated through USB2. Could you give me the exact definition of your drive ?

(3) is the drive new ?

Yes I switched the connection of iSight in the back of the ext drive case...iSight will still work fine.

Yes the drive is new 120GB model WD1200JBRTL ATA.

Thanks!! Another reason for grtting FW to work is that I need to be able to boot from an ext drive - something that I can't do from an USB drive.
I did another test...I formatted a completely new system 10.3.9 just to check if my current systems files would have had something missing or wrong...did not work either. Actually Mac OS X seems to be OK as it recognizes the FW device in System Profiler but it won't recognize the fact that it is a hard drive.

no response from WD. perhaps because, on their support site form, I was enable to introduce a serial number for the drive.

Could you try to contact them and expose your problem.

I doubt they can help us because of the intermeidate case on which they surely try to report all the problems.

Up to now, I found any solution or similar case on the Web

Well, classic candies like "power of the machine for a hour ...", "could you extract the drive and put it in another case".

Louis, when you use it in USB, you can hear it spinning Right ?
And in Firewire mode ? Do you hear it ?

yes...in usb mode I get it working like it should be!! When I have it in FW mode it spins too but does not mount.

I slowly imagine that the FW bridge within the case could be the culprit.
Do you buy he case with the drive inside or do you put the drive yourself in the case ?

Do you have the opportunity to test the drive with another mac or why not a PC..but in FW mode ?

I bought the case without the drive. Unfortunately I don't have another configuration that would allow me to test the drive in external mode in FW.

Parfait... on peut continuer en francais donc!!
Je viens de deballer the nouveau G5 iMac 2GHz que ma femme s'est offert. Une belle bete avec Tiger dedans. J'ai essaye de brancher mon disque externe avec FW et USB2. Resultat: le G5 reconnait et monte le disque sur le desktop avec USB2. En ce qui concerne FW...System profiler reconnait qu'il y a un appareil branche sur FW mais indique "device unknown".
Cette histoire de FW est vraiment frustrante. WD semble etre la seule option maintenant (?).

Louis, je n'ai toujours aucune réponse de WD, mais au vu de l'expérience sur le G5 (héhé, belle bête, j'ai le 20''), je pense de plus en plus vers un problème de pont FW dans le boitier Acomdata. Le pied serait de pouvoir le mettre dans un autre boitier.
Bon, si WD ne réagit pas ce mardi, il faudra que tu les recontactes de ton coté, question d'avoir un autre ticket chez eux sur ce sujet; j'ai peur qu'en ayant parlé de boitier, ils se soient dits "c'est la faute au boitier"

T'as pas un macway ou CLG ou revendeur dans le coin pour essayer dans un autre boitier ?

j'ai aussi le 20"...c'est ma femme qui l'utilise pour som mail!!
J'ai un quicksilver 733 qui marche bien mais un G5 serait mieux!! J'attend les nouveaux modeles bases sur Intel.
Non je n'ai pas de revendeur Apple autour de chez moi...en fait si il y en a un mais ils sont nuls!!
OK on attend Mardi et j'appelle WD.

C'est parti chez WD..chiche qu'ils vont découvrir que le disque a été acheté aux US et qu'il va falloir relancer le helpdesk américain.

Et à Houston, ca va ?

On tient loin des cépages bordelais, du Jurançon ou d'un VieilleVigne ?

Ca marche!!! aussi bien avec FW qu'avec USB2 le pieds d'enfer!! J'ai enleve le cavalier (le disque etait en slave)...et ca marche !!

Le vendeur du case (Accomdata) a ete tres bien egalement...apres quelques tentatives (avant que je fasse appel a MacOSX.com), il m'avait offert de renvoyer le case pour test / remplacement ou remboursement. Ils pensaient qu'ils avaient peut etre un probleme avec le bridge FW.
Ds tous les cas la vie est belle. Je peux maintenant booter sur FW le iMac de ma fille ss etre oblige de l'ouvrir (disque interne ne veut plus booter apres un upgrade du Mac OS !!!). Ma femme vient the s'offrir le 2GHz 20" merde il est beau...je crois que tu as le meme non?? J'envisage un processor upgrade du iMac de ma fille un 400 MHz DV Graphite...fastmac.com offre l'upgrade a G4 550 pour $195. Ca lui permettra de finir High School (j'ai deja upgrade la ram a 1GB et le disque interne a 80GB.
J'ai 2 iMac 233 gonfles a G4 466 MHz ...bete de course que j'ai finalement vendu ds eBay pour achete le mini Mac a mon fils.
Moi j'ai tjs mon quicksilver 733 mais je me demande si je ne vais pas upgrade a G4 1.8GHz (j'ai deja 1.5 GB ram et 240 GB de disque). Of course tout ce monde tourne autour de Airport Express et Airport Extreme !!
Je prefere attendre les nouveaux jouets Apple a processor Intel (merde ...plus j'y pense plus je me demande si Apple n'est pas en train de vendre son ame au diable pour baisser les couts de production.)
Au fait Phil, qu'est ce que tu recommandes pour capturer un film digital a partir d'une camera video a partir de mon quicksilver??

(2) Ma fille (coincidence si, si) a un G3 400 DV qui tourne très bien sous Panther.
200 $ pour 200 Mhz, perso, je le sens pas trop. Et puis j'aime pas trop updater des machines anciennes.
Surtout, en AppleEducation, avec un mini à 500 euros ou un un Emac à 700
Pour le QS, là, effectivement je ne dis pas.
(3) Pour capturer le film, je ne connais pas. Vais quand même jetter un oeil sur le Web. Te répondrai en privé. Vais cloturer ce ticket
