Knowledge Level: Beginner

Problem: Software
Computer Type: Apple
Model: Performa 631 CD
RAM: 24meg
RAM Enhancer: None
OS Version: System 7.5.5

Description:
My 631 CD computer was often crashing, but only while trying to get a www. connection thru my ISP, AOL. Error codes and my "look at the manual" troubleshooting led me to believe I had a software conflict. I am missing the "Perfoma CD" Manual.

My computer shipped with 8 MG of RAM and 7.?.? which would not support the latest AOL software. I installed a 32 MG SIMM and went unline and did 2 upgrades (Update 2? and the next one 7.5.5?) to my current software. I also purchased and installed a Best Data 33.6 modem and UMAX scanner .

I've had problems with the the new RAM from the start. The new SIMM is in the right spot, but only one bank appears to be being ulitized, as my computer says it has only 24 MG of physical RAM. Also the modem only connects at 26k.

I proceeded to trash, but not empty, my AOL, and scanner applications. I went to the start-up control panel and clicked onto the "Start-up CD" icon versus hard disk icon. After inserting my Performa system CD, I clicked restart.

The computer will not start - just funny music and sometimes a sad faced computer on a black screen. Can you help please?

Hi welcome to Nowonder

Have you tryed restarting with the extensions off? Have you tryed starting up with the System CD and hold down the C key? Try these two things then get back to me and let me know what happened and we can go from there. Best regards sharona@nowonder
