I have downloaded Windows medis player 9 for mac osx , but still when i try to play a video from the internet it says "cannot play invalid request". Its odd because the site says that the videos can play on PC and mac and even provide the link to download the media player.
What else could be wrong with my settings?

Please share the URL of the page containing the media file you're trying to play. Even if a site say that their media is playable on a Mac, you may not necessary believe it. There are many sloppy web developers who never test their work but just make incorrect assumptions.

There are usually 3-4 videos on the site to watch. I dont normally even watch this stuff and have been very happy with quick time. but my first cousin is a contestant on this show , so this is the first time I've tried to use windows media player on my Mac.

I am sorry to tell you I had tried to watch these videos in the past, but it is a problem with Microsoft. This is very typical of Microsoft, especially on Microsoft web site. They did not code the page properly.
You can try copying the Link to the video directly into Windows Media Player. For example, if you want to watch the Clinic #3 video, you can copy the URI of the resulting page after you click on the "Watch Video". What you need to copy is everything from "mms://" onwards.
mms://a98.v87253.c8725.g.vc.akamaistream.net/7/98/8725/v0001/msnent.download.akamai.com/8725/DBA90618/published/Video/Projects/High/rk_wk4_vocaltraining.wmv
