I have recently upgraded my iMac from system 9.2.2 to 10.3.2
The following no longer work.
1. my Lexmark X75 printer - can install drivers from original disks but nothing useful happens
2. IBM ViaVoice won't run from the Classic environment. I have the Millenium edition. I have looked on the Scansoft support page but this edition is not mentioned. I have not tried to re-install this yet since there is a lot of work in setting it up again.

There may be more but I haven't tested everything yet

I have tried to find online support for these but my search must not be good enough.

Do you have any idea where I can find information to tell me whether I can upgrade ot will have to buy new software - which will of course piss me off.

The jump fro 9.2.2 to 10.3.2 is huge. I'm not surprized that your printer doesn't work anymore. Make sure you've gone to your printer's homepage to download the latest drivers that work for 10.3+ etc... You will also have to purchas the latest via voice so it will work in 10.3.

Thanks,
Paul Fletcher

I don't expect my old software to run under 10.x but is there any way to make it work in the classic environment? After all, until I upgraded I had software that was all working fine. I just needed to run some software that wasn't available for 9.x and already the grief I've had makes me want to go back and live in a cave.

Okay, so you have the classic environment installed & your computer will boot into classic mode while booted into OS X? If classic mode is installed & you have the latest version of classic which is 9.2.2, your software should run in classic mode.

My main question: You have the classic environment installed & your computer will boot into classic mode while booted into OS X?

Thanks,
Paul

Yes it will run in classic mode. When I double click my old files classic launches automatically and many old software packages run OK. My main problems are I can't print from classic mode and IBM viavoice says it can't run from the blue box and quits. I can no longer find the actual files belonging to Eudora pro but it runs from the recent applications alias.

I can print from OSX after installing the latest version of the Lexmark printer driver in OSX.

You could try changing your startup disk to the 9.2.2 system folder Via the System Preferences, "Startup Disk". Once in 9.2.2 I would search for Eudora Pro once again to see if anything shows up now that your booted into 9.2.2.

I would also try ViaVoice & see if it works once booted only into 9.2.2 & not just running 9.2.2 via OS X.

If your printer isn't working under 9, go to the lexmark website & download the appropriate drivers needed for the printer to work in 9.2.2.

I'm extremely rusty in OS 9, but once you have the drivers installed, use the Chooser to select the printer that you want to you. If all goes well I think the printer will continue to work when booted in OS X & it will also work via your classic applications. Let me know if ViaVoice runs when your booted solely into OS 9. If it does, then theirs something conflicting between classic & OS X.

I just have to ask, do you only want to use ViaVoice in 9, or do you want to use it in OS X? If you want to use it in OS X, you will need ViaVoice Simply Dictation Mac OS X Edition.

Thanks,
Paul Fletcher

--> I hope I was able to shed some light, I will keep searching for the answer to your problems. If I'm not able to fix it, I'd be happy to open this topic in the tech pool again, so other people with expertise in this area might be able to contribute.

Thanks Paul,

I'll try what you suggest. Since ViaVoice was working fine and doing everything I needed under my old system I am happy to continue using it like that. I guess it would be cleaner to upgrade everything to Mac OSX, but it gets kinda expensive to do what I was doing happily anyway by the time I shell out for software upgrades.

Yeah... Its pretty expensive to bring everything up to OS X, but its well worth it. Especially if you use those programs a lot.

Thanks,
Paul Fletcher
