Sirs
I have all my old Outlook mail in a folder called archive.mbox.
However when I try to import it into Mail, the file name is 'greyed out' and I can't open it.
Any ideas ?

Do you mean that the File->Import mailboxes..then choose Outlook...then proceed ..does not ?
Do you speak about Outlook of Windows ? (in this case, the archive will be a .pst proprietary file)
