Hi Sean,
THere's a bunch of things that might cause this, hard to say which. But the first and easiest thing to try is to replace the Mac's clock battery. It's called a HALF DOUBLE A.. it's less than one inch long and can be had at any Radio Shack store for less than 15 bucks. They used to be purple, but may not be any more.
Get it and then open the case of your Blue and White Mac. The battery is probably partially hidden under a little black open holed cover. A gentle prying with a small screwdriver toward the exterior of that black cover just inside each end of it will allow it to pop free.
Next, take careful note of which direction the battery is set, so you can maintain proper polarity when installing the new one. Put it in backwards and you may kill your computer.
You can reinstall the little black cover if you want to or trash it. The battery isn't going anywhere.
Let us know if this helps.-Dave

Hi, Sometimes, booting from the CD that came with the machine is more effective in difficult cases. Try booting into OS 9 if you can.
It's possible that the hard drive's data structure is scrambled, especially what's known as the volume header; this is the part of the directory that leads into the rest of the data's index. If that gets messed up, the machine will often get unresponsive. The only way to fix that would be to use Norton or Disk Warrior, an excellent utility. Neither one is cheap.
Otherwise, find a CD like an OS 9 one and just reformat the drive and start over.
Have you tried using a Firewire cable and target mode over to another Mac? Often you can get that to work without having to boot up the messed up Mac. This is what you must try if he has data he cares about saving.

I put a brand new hard drive in it that formatted in my computer it will still not boot off the cd rom. it gives me the not symbol and has a forever turning circle. If I go out and buy a firewire cable is thier a special one I have to buy. will it allow me to run diagnostics from my computer like tech tool. or even the pather utilities. how do I go about getting the two computers to communications.
