I'm very sorry I did it, but I brought my portable 250GB hard drive with me on my holiday trip, in my carry-on, since I didn't want it to get lost with my checked luggage. I thought I would need some files on it. But guess what--I didn't need it--didn't use it once--and now when I've plugged it back into my G5, I get a "buzz-buzz-buzz" sound. I know that CANNOT be good. And definiteley not showing up on the desktop. Okay, now that this has happened, I want to know what my immediate recovery tools are before I start initializing or otherwise erasing any data.

I have TechTool Pro, Norton etc. but the problem is that the disk is not showing up on the desktop. It's a FireWire drive. Any help will be appreciated.

Does Disk Utility recognize the drive? If so have it repair the drive. Do this as many times as it takes until no errors are reported then see if things are any better.

Does "etc." include Disk Warrior? If so boot from the Disk Warrior CD and see if it recognizes the drive. If it does have it rebuild the directory and then see if it fixes the problem.

Do the Disk Utility thing first. If that doesn't work then try Disk Warrior.

Charlie, no go. Disk Utility doesn't see it and Disk Warrior doesn't see it either. If only there were a way to get it on the desktop, then I could check it, or even initialise it!

But it doesn't even spin when I turn it on--just a series of low beeps. Dunno what I'm going to do . . .

But thanks for the reply!
