hi,
well two things actually. first one is that i asked about my mute button going on and off for no reason and i was sent a note that said my question was posted in a forum. there was a link enclosed. when i clicked on it i was told that i couldn't get into the forum because maybe i wanted to do some editing or didn't have requisite registration. neither of which is true. any insights would be appreciated.
now for the reason i'm writing.
vital statistics:
machine model: Power Mac G3 (PCI graphics)
CPU type: 400 mhz powerPC G4
1 gb ram
osx 10.3.9
connected to internet always on through cable modem.
running airport through installed card
two internal hard drives each one partitioned into two sections.
partitions 1 and 2 = 40 megs
partions 3 and 4 = 120 megs
system is installed on partition 3.
do you think that installating tiger would solve this problem?
thank you in advance.
a lot.

Andy,
First problem: You need to be logged into the forum in order to see the post. When you registered, did you respond to the activation email?
Let me know your user name on the forum, and I can check your account with us.
Second problem: Can you explain a bit more about the slowness. Is this just the internet or system wide? Is it slow to open a folder or program?
Do you have an OS system folder installed on partition 1 and/or 2?
Have you used the OS CD to start up the computer and run Disk utility to repair partition 3?

hi cheryl,
to your question about if i have os' installed on partitions 1 and 2, the answer is yes. on partition 1 have classic. on partition 2 i have os 10.2
regarding where is the slowness: everything is slow. opening entourage. sometimes when typing an email the letters will be a few seconds behind me. most often i'll get a spinnng ball while the computer is completing something before i can move on. one thing i've done is activate my corners with expose so i can leap out of a given program.
i do occasionally get that horrible gray and black death screen- kernel panic.
a few months ago i installed and ran disk warrior, and somehow i think that may have something to do with my recent problems.
i will run disk utility tonight.
thanks.
regarding forum registration- i am registered with the site, i have an ID and a password, and obviously my email is listed. i'll hunt around. i guess i need to register again in the forums?

i am totally confused about what you just said. i am registered in the forums area. according to the system i am authorized to go anywhere. yet, i received, to another question the following note:

andyclayman, you do not have permission to access this page. This could be due to one of several reasons:
Your user account may not have sufficient privileges to access this page. Are you trying to edit someone else's post, access administrative features or some other privileged system?
If you are trying to post, the administrator may have disabled your account, or it may be awaiting activation.
Log Out Home
is vbulletin another location? does it require another registration? how does one get permission to access the page that i was told had solutions to my previous problem?
thanks in advance.
Cheryl - Sep 8, 2005 - 7:06 am
Andy,
vBulletin is the program that we use to run the site. In checking your account, you should not have any trouble.
Could it be that you have two registered accounts using different email addresses? Do you have more than one email address?
Correct me if I am wrong with this picture: You are logged in. You go to the Free Mac Support link to view your questions. You click on the title of one of your questions and you get the no permission to access page. But when you click on this question, you can access it.

cheryl,
here's how it goes.
i got an email from macosx.com saying that my query had been placed in a forum and i could get answers there. in the email there was a link which when i clicked on it, took me to the page i sent you.
i only have one email and don't have a duplicate account so that's not the problem.
but, my real problem is the one i initially wrote to you about. as mentioned above (in previous notes) my computer is just crawling. opening apps, saving files, switching apps, all of them set off the little spinning ball which can take anywhere from 5 to 30 seconds to execute whatever simple i'm asking for.
this happens whether i have one app open, or several. after i've rebooted or not. i took your advice and booted up from a mac osx 10.3 disk and then ran disk repair and permissions repair. while a few small things were identified, nothing hideous showed up. and i saw little, if any gain.
so my question is- what's going on? and will installing tiger provide some remedy?
thanks in advance.

Andy,
I do believe I know the problem with that link. When you selected a category for that question - did you happen to select Tiger OS 10.4?
I am working on getting that fixed with the site administrator.
As for Safari - before you do install Tiger, this needs to be fixed.
Quit Safari
Go to Home>Library>Caches.
Locate and open the Safari folder.
You should have several folders inside there.
Open each one and delete everything in there.
Empty the trash.
Now go to Home>Library>Preferences
Go to the View menu at the top of your screen and select by list.
Now everything will be in alpha order.
Locate and trash the com.apple.safari.plist file
Empty the trash.
Now give Safari a try.

We found the problem with your question that got moved to the forums. There was a problem on our side (scripts and forum sections). The problem is now corrected, but ---- but many of the questions that were moved to the forum due to no answer in the free Mac support were lost.
I am sorry - but you will need to ask your question again. This time it will not be lost.

cheryl,
thanks for resolving that. i thought i had lost my mind somewhere.
i believe that you answered someone else's question in your last email to me. your answer below relates to a safari issue, not mine, which is what to do about my G4 that has become very slow. following are your questions back to me regarding my system. my responses to you in cap letters.
cheryl says: Can you explain a bit more about the slowness. Is this just the internet or system wide? Is it slow to open a folder or program? IT IS SYSTEM WIDE, NOT INTERNET. THE SLOWNESS OCCURS MOSTLY WITHIN AN APP. ALMOST EVERYTHING I DO TRIGGERS THAT SPINNING BALL. CUTTING, PASTING, SAVING, ETC.
Do you have an OS system folder installed on partition 1 and/or 2? YES. ON PARTITION 1 HAVE OS 9.1, ON PARTITION 2 I HAVE OSX 10.2
Have you used the OS CD to start up the computer and run Disk utility to repair partition 3? YES. EVERYTHING IS OK.
BELOW IS THE NOTE YOU SENT ME- SOLUTIONS FOR SOMEONE'S SAFARI PROBLEM.
Quit Safari

Cheryl - Sep 9, 2005 - 5:44 pm
Andy,
I wanted you to test out Safari first, to see if it was a cache problem. Many of your apps have a cache folder.
The second problem I was addressing was the first question you posted and could not view it when you got notification that it was sent to the forums.
Back to the trouble at hand:
Since Disk Utility shows nothing wrong, the problem could be one of two things.
Hard Drive space - you need at least 15% of your hard drive kept available or empty. You partitioned the drives - how much space did you give to each partition? Now check to see how much available space is left on the partition.
To check for available space, just open a folder on the drive in question. At the bottom will show how many items and how much space is available.
Let me know what the window says and how large your partition is.
Memory - even though you state you have 1 GB installed - you may have a failing chip. To check to see what is registering go to Utilities folder (in Applications) and start up System Profiler.
Click on the arrow next to Hardware if it is not expanded, then click on Memory. Does it show all of your memory sticks with a total of 1 GB?
And I apologize for the confusion.

Hi Cheryl,
Thanks for hanging in with me.
I generally only use Firefox as a browser. i checked all of my memory, and all memory sticks are reading (250megs ea.).
the hard drive memory is probably the culprit. this is what my drives/partitions look like.
Hard drive 1
partition 1 (os 9.1) - 17.89 gigs used, 1.18 gigs available
partition 2 (osx 10.2)- 16.72 used, 2.35 gigs available
Hard drive 2
partition 3 (osx 10.3 current system)- 69.65 gigs used, 11.08 available
partition 4 (no system) -23.96 gigs used, 9.78 gigs available.
thanks again for your attention.
-andy
Cheryl - Sep 12, 2005 - 7:26 am
Andy,
It is indeed the hard drive space that is causing the problem. You are very close to the limit on partition 3.
I suggest you back up those important files in your Home folder that you do not use often, then delete them from the drive.
Also go to Home>Library>Caches
Each folder in here holds copies of files that you have opened. Mail is one that gets large. Open Mail, then open one folder in there and delete all that is in there. Do this with all the folders inside Mail.
FireFox also has a cache folder. The easiest way to empty the cache is to open FireFox and go to the Preferences. You can empty Cache and history from here.
Once done, see if the speed improves and let me know.

hi cheryl,
thanks. one question about caches. my mail application is entourage. i don't see it in my cache folder. is there somewhere else to look for it?
by the library in my home folder i assume you mean the library in my user account, correct?
thanks again.
Cheryl - Sep 17, 2005 - 7:58 am
Andy,
Microsoft does some strange things with their programs as they do not follow what other programs do in storing files. Depending on which version of Entourage you use, depends on where those files are stored.
The following folder is the default location for the Entourage 2001 folder structure:
Hard Disk Name

ocuments:Microsoft User Data:Office 2001 Identities:Main Identity
The following folder is the default location for the Entourage X folder structure:
Hard Disk Name/Users/user_name/Documents/Microsoft User Data/Office X Identities/Main Identity
The following folder is the default location for the Entourage 2004 folder structure:
Hard Disk Name/Users/user_name/Documents/Microsoft User Data/Office 2004 Identities/Main Identity
Hard Disk Name/Users/user_name/Documents/ is the Documents folder in your Home folder.
"by the library in my home folder i assume you mean the library in my user account, correct?"
Yes, you are correct.
Let me know if this speeds things up.

not yet. i am moving files off of the partition that has my current operation system (10.3) to achieve at least 15% free space. does this really mean that if i have an 80 gig drive i need to leave 12 gigs open?
regarding entourage, i have not yet done the cache clearing, mainly because i cannot find it. when i go to users>documents>microsoft user data>office x identities>main identity i have a folder that has 5 files in it. database, database cache, mailing lists, rules, and signatures.
am i to delete the database cache file? it's pretty small. or is there some other cache file i'm missing?
does indexing the hard drives help or hinder performance? i noticed that none of them are indexed.
i think i am about 24 hours away from knowing, or not knowing if i've solved the problem.
thanks again for sticking with me.
-andy
Cheryl - Sep 19, 2005 - 5:31 pm
Andy,
Yes, with an 80 GB drive you need to keep 12 GB free. But you have your drive partitioned. So on Partition 2 with OS 10.2 you need 2.5 or 3 GB free. On partition 3, you need to keep 10.5 GB free. This is to give room for the cache files, temporary files, and any downloads.
Yes, the Entourage cache is the database cache.
Indexing the drive is helpful when you need to do a find file. When your drive is indexed, the find file works faster. The first time you index, it may take the computer a while to do it. And you should have it go through the indexing periodically to add those files that you have added since the first indexing.
If you do not use Find File often, I would not worry about indexing the drive.

hi cheryl
here's where i am. i've cleared off space on my partition 3- the one with the operating system currently in use on it. the operating speed may have improved, but everything is still very slow. almost anything i do in any program, pull down a menu, change a color, etc, triggers the spinning ball. the problem is within applications. entourage, canvas, photoshop. not so bad in word or excel.
i have not deleted the entourage database cache, though i have located it. the cache is fairly small, maybe 40kb or less. do you think deleting this will make a difference to 1) entourage operation, 2) any of the other apps?
is there something else that i should be doing?
thanks again
Cheryl - Sep 22, 2005 - 6:08 pm
Andy,
I am really perplexed as to why you are still running slow. Do you shut down your computer every night? OS X has nightly routines that are done and if you shut down the computer, they are not done. Once program that does those routines is Macaroni.
http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/9633
It does work and make a difference.
Do you have Classic running when this happens?

i always leave my computer on. i do think that the computer is working much better than it was before i took your suggestions. so thank you for your help.
i think that the problem may be that between the cards i've installed (usb 2.00, airport) additional internal harddrive 200 gigs, external cd burner, and all the things i do, the machine is just overwhelmed. its processor isn't very fast, and, i'm thinking that there are lots of little software things that are tying up the machine.
i should probably, when i have the cash, just upgrade to a big fast monster machine.
thanks again for your help.

Go back to the startup items in Accounts (after you click on your user name) .
Click on itunes Helper, then click on the minus button at the bottom of the window.
Do the same with Microsoft Database Daemo.
This will delete the items from the automatic start up.
