I just bought a tiger os and realised that it comes on DVD.

Can I install tiger os on a G3 machine that does not have a DVD Drive. I tried with an external dvd drive but it does not seem to be supported. Can I mount a disk image and install tiger? If so, could you let me know step by step process for that.

You can exchange the DVD for CDs. Go to this site: http://www.apple.com/macosx/upgrade/ where you will find the exchange program info in the sidebar along with the link to download the required form.

Thanks for your response. I'm aware of media exchange program. I was just looking for some other alternative which would avoid waiting time (2 weeks) to get the cds delivered from apple. Something like mounting a disk image on mac os and installing it from there. Any idea?

You cannot boot from a disk image, so that would not work. You might succeed with your external DVD drive by trying this utility, PatchBurn, at www.versiontracker.com.

Otherwise, if you have access to another Mac with a DVD drive, you could install from the other Mac by connecting the two with a Firewire cable and then booting your computer into Target Disk Mode, and installing from the other computer.
