I have a Power Mac G5 2.5 GHz with all standard options running Mac OS X 10.3.9. Recently, the finder has been freezing to a point where the mouse moves but no keyboard commands work including the force quit commands. It usually starts soon after waking from sleep and usually with the mail.app. The mail.app will freeze with the beach ball then when I go down to the auto-hiding dock it comes up but freezes itself. From this point on the only thing that works is to hold down the power button for five seconds. I do not recall this happening at all in the past. I have had it since December and applied all the Apple recommended software updates. Any ideas?
Thanks,
Jav

Jav,

My name is Cheryl and I will be assisting you.

First, locate the 10.3 OS Install CD. Insert the CD, then restart the computer and immediately hold down the C key.

When the computer starts up with the CD you will get the Installer screen. Do not click on the screen. Instead go to the Installer Menu and select Disk Utility.

When that opens, click on the second icon at the top left, then click on Repair Disk at the bottom far right.

Watch the activity screen. If it does any repairs, you will need to click on the Repair Disk button again when the first pass is done. You want to make sure it finds all the problems and repairs them. Appears Okay is what you want to see.

Now click on Repair Permissions which is to the left of the Repair Disk button.

When that is done, quit Disk Utility and restart the computer.

Now give it a try. Let me know if this corrects the problem.

Thanks Cheryl,
I did what you said. There were no errors to repair. There were some fixed permissions. I had previously tried fixing the permissions. I'll let you know if the problem occurs again.

Jav,

Do you shut down your computer every night? If so, the system is not doing the routine maintenances needed.

I recommend you using Macaroni.

Once installed, have it run all the jobs, then set it up to do them when you start up the computer. After three days, you will notice an improvement.

I leave my computer on all the time. I use it every day. I had the hang up again today. The computer woke from sleep, Safari was up. I left the room for 1 minute and returned to find the spinning beach ball in Safari. I clicked on the the desktop and got the spinning beach ball in Finder. I tired the keyboard force quit command but they did not work. I moved the mouse to the dock, it came up I clicked and held on the Finder icon. Nothing happened and the dock did not go away. So I held the power button down until the computer turned off.
I will make sure the scheduled tasks are run.
Thanks.

Jav,

How much memory do you have installed? Was there any other programs running besides Safari?

You may have something running in the background. To check this, go to the System Preferences>Accounts. Click on your user name at the left, then click on Startup Items.

What is in that list?

I have Virex 7.5 installed.
In the startup items are:
iCalAlarmScheduler
iTunesHelper
I also have an Epson CX6600 scanner/printer connected with the vendor drivers installed.

I confirmed that the periodic tasks were run.
I'll let you know if I have any more hang ups.
Thanks,
Jav

Jav,

If you do have problems I suggest you go back to the System Preferences>Accounts>Startup Items.

Click on iTunes Helper, then click on the minus sign at the very bottom of the window.

Now give it a test run.
