I have a nice utility called Macaroni, which does the daily, weekly, and monthly disk maintenance tasks regardless of when the computer is on, off, or sleeping. It is not free, but to me it was worth the price. If you do not like the idea of plists being left behind when you uninstall applications, you can get Appzapper (also not free, but reasonable) to zap the whole works...
