SystemUIServer actually controls all the toolbar icons on the right where you are having the issues. I'd do a safe boot first just to see if it makes a difference then all that is left is what ora said as in either an archive & install or clean install then migrate from backup.

The fact that it is the same on a new user is ominous - means it it not user plist corruption etc. First step, backup! Next boot from the OS X disk, go to Utilities>Disk Utility and verify/repair the drive. Then consider a reinstall I think, unless someone else has an idea. My 2nd internal HD, both partitions, disappeared after a Time Machine update (I had transferred a lot of files from the Mac HD to the 2nd HD --a Seagate 750 -- since my last update). I had left it to back up and it was frozen when I returned. Had to shut off with switch. The 2nd HD does show up on the Time Machine external drive, and it appears files are in there and readable....

Thanks, Diablo, So, just to confirm, if I attach the new MBP via firewire like I do now with our family MBP, I can backup data to the same device (albeit not at the same time as the 15" MBP) without worrying that the data from the 13" MBP is going to overwrite the existing 15" machine's backups?
