Mac Plus beats AMD Dual Core PC

This made me curious to see how some of the simple apps I use stack up to each other. I took a 1.5MB text file and replaced a string that occurred about 4100 times. The rough results: TextWrangler: ~14 seconds BBEdit Lite: ~2 seconds NeoOffice: ~4 seconds TextEdit: <0.5 seconds Wow. I need to start using TextEdit more. And TextWrangler less. I knew it was slower than...

Mac Plus beats AMD Dual Core PC

Do you mean in place of the PC, or in place of the Mac Plus? I have to admit, I was surprised by some of this. It's no shock to me that the software of 10-30 years ago was vastly more efficient. Not only is that apparent in everyday use, but it's also only logical: As we get more processing power, a lot of that is used to make software easier to develop, not faster. And...

Terminal replacement

Thanks for the suggestions guys! PathSnagger looks like a great replacement for the venerable CopyPath (which I've been using since 10.1, IIRC). I actually use BBEdit Lite (obsolete, I know, but I ALSO use TextWrangler), and I guess the command-line plugin is exclusive to the full BBEdit. I can't find mention of it on their site, anyway. I should've known there'd be...

Terminal replacement

Haha, perhaps I shouldn't have edited my original post so much. Basically, the funky text control is driving me crazy in two ways: It makes it an awful chore to do the same command many times with just one or two different parameters. Heaven forbid I want to delete/overwrite an entire pathname! I'm sure there's a historical reason for this (maybe even a good one), but...

Terminal replacement

An example of where this might be handy, would help. The command line is not really intended to be a GUI editor. You could try using BBedit, or maybe even TextWrangler. Both have the ability to run commands from within the application, and get the output back in editable documents.

Error in script

I generally save my scripts-in-development in my home folder. Once I know they are running as expected, then I move them to a more logical place. I personally like the idea of /usr/local/sbin for my stuff. Others may provide guidance on this as well... There have been many debates as to which text editor is the bestest of all time, bow in it's general direction, it roolz...

Mac osx software you cant live without

BBEdit Lite. It's so good that I stick with it instead of using its successor, TextWrangler. BBEdit Lite is just so much faster and simpler. I will use it until it no longer runs. ...
