Very very long startups...

Yeah, the more fonts you install the longer it takes to startup the OS. Be aware also that many of those fonts might end up being very similar to other fonts so you end up having duplicates that you might not need. I had done this years ago on my father's Power Mac G5 and it also had the same fate (OS at the time was 10.3.9). You might have to go in Font Book (if possible)...

Very very long startups...

Ok, so a few days ago I tried to install a package of new fonts using font-book. I tried to (stupidly) install something like 1500 fonts at one time, which eventually crashed my machine. When I restarted my computer, it loaded all the way to the desktop where it stalled for like 10mins and then eventually started working OK. Now everytime I restart it, the same thing happens-...

Safari displaying garbled text

Have you added or removed any fonts recently? Usually odd garbled letters occur for fonts gone bad. Go to Font Book (or whatever you use for font management), and disable all user added fonts. If the symptom will go away, enable half of them and see if it's back, until you can find which one caused it (unless Font Book's font validator finds the broken one/s).
