As for software, screen printers today use standard graphics applications. Photoshop and Illustrator will certainly do the job. So too will AppleWorks, GraphicConverter, or Print Shop. Keep in mind also that if you have more than one application you might want to open the images in (for instance, I typically send images to Photoshop, FlickrUploadr and GraphicConverter depending on what I want to do with them) you can just drag the photos from iPhoto onto the program's icon in the dock.

I've had this happen to me before using my Canon G5 camera. An entire session of photos that viewed fine in the camera simply would not open on any machine I put them on using several different programs (Photoshop, GraphicConverter, Preview, iPhoto, etc...). I don't know what caused the problem, nor did I figure out a way to view the photos, but I did nothing to the camera...

Those .img files are raster graphics image files not disk image files. GraphicConverter can open your files. However, it is not at all clear what you intend to do with a graphic image. ...

'is there a Paint equivalent for Macs that will run on OS X?' - no. There are 'paint' applications for MacOS X, ... 'Google' search result. Consider 'GraphicConverter'. It will open your graphic file, and allow for resolution and / or size manipulation.

Navigate to and open the '~/Library/Contextual Menu Items/' folder. There you will find 'GraphicConverterCMI.plugin'. Trash and delete the file. Additional note. You will have to log out and then log in, to remove the 'GraphicConverter' menu item, and associated sub-menus.
