hi. so i burned about 4 movies of mine so that i could bring the copies to school and leave the originals at home for my family to view. i used mac the ripper first and then burned the video_ts folders using popcorn (which compressed the folders to fit onto a 4.7GB DVD-RW) without any errors or trouble. maybe it's important to say here that i used an external dvd-burner...

im usin toast 7 to back up my DVD's, except once ive chosen the dvd i wanna back up, after ripping it with mactheripper and chosing the appropriet media, it just "shakes" when i hit record. it recognises my superdrive, and the settings are all in the right place so what gives? ...

I like to use mactheripper. Then you can join the vob files easily with the "cat" command in terminal or with dvision. Next use openshiiva: http://openshiiva.sourceforge.net very easy to use, allows for easy cropping and encodes audio along with video. Final product is high quality mp4.

Popcorn isn't a ripping program. If you want to copy a "protected" DVD, you must first rip it with MacTheRipper. Then just drag the VIDEO_TS folder that MTR created onto Popcorn's window and click the big red button. Download Handbrake from here: http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/21117 I would use it in tandem with MacTheRipper -- MacTheRipper to pull the files onto your hard drive, then Handbrake to convert them. Converting directly from a DVD puts a lot of stress on your drive, as the conversion process can take a long time.

You're right, I don't have an editing program. ;) I downloaded and tried the MacTheRipper but it literally pulls the contents of the DVD directly off; I can't seem to find how to convert them to a movie file. So right now I just have a folder of BUP, IFO, and VOB files. m19

However -- if the DVD has Macrovision protection, chances are the copy will look like crap. This is still a gray area of legality here -- the MPAA doesn't want you to do exactly that, but there are no laws against it currently (or no laws that have been interpreted to cover that behavior specifically in court).
