Rip those DVDs

the DMCA only applies to USA -- so if you're in other parts of the world this may well be perfectly legal. There are 2 ways to rip a DVD, shrink it (ie. backing up a commercial DVD to a DVD-R, with all menus, extras etc in tact), or rip video files (eg to (MP4, AVI, H.264 etc) 1) shrinking it - Use MacTheRipper to copy the video files to a hard disk (use full disk...

MAC OSX Applications with same functionality as Windows ones

Handbrake is great, but only if you're looking to convert the DVD to MPEG4 (like Divx or something). If you're looking to make an exact copy, you can copy the DVD straight to your hard drive with MacTheRipper. You can then burn the resulting VIDEO_TS folder to a new DVD using Roxio Toast. There are probably some free burning apps you could use, too, but I don't know which ones...

Adding dvd subs of other languages

MacTheRipper can rip files off the DVD, but I don't know how you would go about adding subtitles? A quick search reveals methods for Windows, but not mac. If you want to add subtitles manually, you could rip via handbrake, and add via Quicktime Pro/iMovie/FCP, then re-burn.

DVD Unlocker (region free)

My understanding is that there's no way around it on Intel Macs (yet). On PPC Macs, I've never had problems with VLC. You could also try playing the DVDs with MPlayer or ripping them with MacTheRipper.

Editing Consumer-recorded DVDs on Mac

Whether you use XP or EP recording shouldn't matter, it'll just reduce the video quality. If you plan to import as DVD format you'll need something like Mactheripper (a free program) to transfer it as a Video TS folder (mostly .vob files) to your Powerbook's hard drive. To edit you'll need to convert the Video TS folder into another format (something like .mov, mpeg. avi,...

Need help with Ripper, please

Movies on "standard" DVDs are usually compressed. When MTR rips one, the output VIDEO_TS folder is uncompressed. That's why you see 8gb file sizes. As Microsoft Tech Support says "It's a feature, not a bug." Geezerbuttz has enough on his plate dealing with protection schemes. He isn't going to recompress the output for you. The other respondents have told you the...
