I can not urge you enough to consider an online saving service like Mozy & DropBoxto save you life photos externally so you never loose them. All hards fail at some point and having a piece of mind is a little comforting.

1. Stop immediately using the external. This is VERY important! 2. Either buy a software recovery program (like this) or use a service like Drive Savers. Now you know why geeks all the time say backup, backup, backup! This is also the reason Apple developed Time Machine. Also this is why services like Mozy & DropBox have come online too.

I can't specifically address your problem. All I would say as an ex-Mozy user you really need to read the fine print vary carefully.

Came across a blog a few minutes after I posted my question.... Looks like MSO 2007 files can be specified in Mozy Mac with the following search string: kMDItemContentType == "org.openxmlformats.*" Found that content types can be read out with mdls in terminal.
