Not to a G5 as that processor was never designed to be used in a notebook. There are some G4 processor upgrades to a faster G4 processor from some third parties, but I personally don't think it's worth the cost when you can save up the money for an early-model MacBook that would still smoke the G4 processor. I don't see the logic there. I boot systems from firewire constantly for testing purposes and there is a decreased performance difference. Yes notebook drives are somewhat slower even if they are 7200RPM drives but comparing a 2.5"SATA to 3.5"FW400 the SATA is going to be faster every time. ...

The opposite is the case. It'll be as fast or faster, since the internal drive is a notebook drive (2.5") whereas the external one is 3.5", a desktop drive. The FW400 port is faster than that internal drive, so booting from external will be perfectly okay.
