Apparently in the continuous Apple upgrades, a preference was changed. Click on the desktop, type Command-J, un-check the "Show icon preview" box, and all is well again. Thanks Apple. You might check your other folders as well; same procedure applies.

For 99% of my needs with photos, iPhoto is fine. When I need to do some more complex stuff, I just drag the photo from the iPhoto front page to the desktop. Then I can open the copy that's put there.
