Backup software?

This is an area that is sort of like asking "who has the prettiest girlfriend." There are a lot of choices and a lot of varying opinions. I know of about 30 different backup programs for OS X (I can give you a list, if you like), and there are a bunch of different philosophies about what is the best backup plan. You might find this e-book very helpful to explain this very...

Mac OS X diploid

By "diploid," do you mean "clone?" If so, Carbon Copy Cloner, Superduper!, and other programs freely available can "clone" an existing Mac OS X installation to another drive/partition while retaining bootability. You can even do this via Disk Utility when booted from the Mac OS X Install/Restore disk.

G4 issue - booting Leopard from external drive

Thanks for **great** help, Randy. Your advice is consistent with a related thread in the MacWorld forum, to the effect that mysterious inconsistent success/failure is happening with the LaCie drives used for external-drive booting, and the most one can do is take the preliminary care your suggest. It seems that if there is failure after that care, I had better move on to...

Using CCC or Superduper!

Yes, all your programs will run. Everything will work exactly as it did before you cloned it. Eh? No, this isn't how UNIX works. UNIX references the disks by their device name, which you have no control over (for example, "sda," "sdb," etc.). The "name" you give your hard drive ("Macintosh HD") is just another benign attribute of your hard drive. You can even change...

Tiger, leopard & Carbon Copy Cloner compatibility

Buenos dias. It's a MacBook Pro running Tiger. This is a friend's computer; he uses it professionally and chooses to use Tiger vs. Leopard. He had an idea (not sure if I grasp it 100%), that we could take my Leopard install disk, slip it in his MBP and boot from that ...in case CCC is balking a (not cooperating w/) the transfer for Leopard taking place through a computer...

Backing up my IBOOK

Well you can reinstall the system, without wiping any of your files using Archive & Install but its worth backign up anyway to be honest. To back up you can use Carbon Copy Cloner or Super Duper both of which will make bootable images of your whole hard disk. If you run 10.5 you can also use TimeMachine to make a backup, which has the advantage of being able to import...
