Hello Its the mac tiger, and I'd say it happened quite suddenly :S though gradually. For a couple of weeks the security update has been failing, due to an "error has occurred". It would also take about 5 minutes after I logged in before I could operate anything on the machine. (the cursor would take on the waiting, busy, purple round form and refuse to do any tasks)....

Cheeshof, seriously? I called 1-800-APL-CARE. They told me that it would work on anything up to Tiger, and on Snow Leopard. Did it work a while and then stop working, or did it never work?
