How to move files in Finder without using the mouse?

Thanks for the comment but I know the terminal commands well - I started using computers in the Unix era, when all you had was a literal terminal! But I really wanted a way to do it from Finder as well. CMD-DEL/Backspace was the solution.

How to move files in Finder without using the mouse?

That was the bit I missed. The icon is on the right-hand end of the bar, I was looking in the actual menus at the left side. Thanks for the clarification, I have it now.

How to move files in Finder without using the mouse?

I can do all of that except the last part. There is no "Show Keyboard Viewer" menu item. I checked all the Finder menus and even tried the various options boxes.

How to move files in Finder without using the mouse?

OK, That clarifies things. My keyboard is "dual compatible" in that the keys have the Apple symbols as well as the PC/Unix markings. I use it in a KVM setup so it has to work with my Linux and Windows boxes as well as my Mac Mini. as such it has a Delete key (marked Del) that deletes the...

How to move files in Finder without using the mouse?

Aha! It is Cmd-Backspace not Cmd-Del. Useful to know, thanks for the pointer.

How to move files in Finder without using the mouse?

Nope! I'd never have guessed that. Did Apple not get the memo about GUIs being intuitive? But I just tried and it doesn't do anything. I also tried Ctrl-Del and Option-Del and they don't work either...

How to move files in Finder without using the mouse?

OK, my new mouse arrived and sanity is restored - at least as far as moving files. I still don't understand why you can't delete a file with the Delete key or why the Cut menu option is greyed out!

How to move files in Finder without using the mouse?

Sheesh! OK thanks. I'm glad I was raised on Unix back in the 80s...

How to move files in Finder without using the mouse?

I am trying to move files around between folders in the Finder. I'm amazed to discover there is no Move menu option. There's also no Cut(there is but it's permanently greyed out) although there is a copy/paste. But that means I have to copy the file then paste it into its new home then go back...

    Aquamacs GUI stopped working

According to the site it's been updated recently and they are working on a native Apple Silicon release. I did try EmacsForMac from homebrew but that fails to start with signing errors (and I know at least 2 other people with the same issue) and also wouldn't recognise -nw at all. Aquamacs did...

    Aquamacs GUI stopped working

I am a new Mac mini user with 35+ years Unix experience (I also used MacOS back in the Tiger/Lion days but things have moved on...). I installed Aquamacs on Monterey and it worked faultlessly. Until today. Now when I start it is just displays the Apple menu and the Aquamacs menu but nothing...

    Opening files in the Desktop

Has anyone solved this yet? I want to do the same as the OP - run a terminal-based app on a file on the desktop (or in my case in Finder). I'm wondering if there is an AppleScript way to do it perhaps? - can you drive the Terminal from Applescript?

    Apple music app filtering display

I feel like there should be a FAQ for this but couldn't find one. In iTunes you could filter by genre but the new Apple Music app seems to have no such facility. Is there any way to get a list of all songs filtered by genre? It's by far the most common filter I use in iTunes and very frustrating...

    Default position of new dialogs/windows

It seems this only happens with some apps. Setting up Safari and Mail the dialogs were all sensibly positioned.

    Default position of new dialogs/windows

I've just taken delivery and setup my new Mac Mini with Monterey. Mostly everything just worked - hooray! One annoyance that I can't find a setting for is that when new dialogs open they appear in random places around the screen. In Windows and Linux I can change the position to always be...

How much space does MacOS use on the drive?

That's $110 for that switch - only 4 ports, so I 'd need 2 = $220 Add an extra $200 for the 10G on the mac Add another $100 for 10G compatible cables And then the cost of the NAS itself fitted with SSD storage and 10G card... getting close to $1000 in total. That's a lot more than the $200 for...

How much space does MacOS use on the drive?

Yes, but that means upgrading my entire network to 10Gb! New cables, new router and switches etc. That would cost $$$ - even more than a thunderbolt disk! Also, I'd need to change my Mac Mini order to have a 10G network card, but too late I've already hit 'buy'... :-)

How much space does MacOS use on the drive?

I already have a full NAS but the snag with NAS is they are limited by network speeds. In my case a 1Gbps network, which, in practice, means about 80MB/s read/write speed. A USB-C SSD drive can deliver 10 times that speed in theory and at least 5 or 6 times in practice. (Thunderbolt 3 would be...

How much space does MacOS use on the drive?

OK, I've hit the buy button. I went for 512GB storage and 16G RAM. I'm also buying a 2TB external USB-C SSD which I'll use for my main storage (see another forum thread for more on that) and backup to my NAS. Thanks for the responses.

Mount or link external drive folder?

Thanks that was useful, although it doesn't cover mounts. (Which may in itself be indicative that in MacOS those are not used as much as in Linux/Unix) A symlink will certainly work for my purposes, I seem to recall reading that hard links only work on the same physical drive so I'll need to do...
