Maybe you should follow the lead of FreeVNC and allow a reverse connection, i.e., allow the person who wants help to solicit it from volunteers online.
I have serious issues asking people to poke holes in their firewalls, MacOS or not.

What about Web sharing? It says to connect to http://my-ip:5100, but the client always reports that the server refuses connection.
This is using Tiger, Epson Stylus CX4600, no firewall on this Mac, and Windows clients.
