You can call Carbon from Cocoa, but I don't think what you want is possible. Cocoa apps are Mach-O binaries, and Carbon apps that can run on 9 have to be CFM.

what's the extra code look like? what's the code you're using to write the file look like?

I think the only changes 9 is going to see from now on will be to improve Classic. It just doesn't make any sense to do anyting else on an OS that's already over.

Change the creator code. Creators take precedence over file extensions.

you probably have to strip their creator codes. use SetFile at /Developer/Tools or one of the GUI apps on VersionTracker. SetFile usage would be SetFile -c '????' (filename)
