    Virtual PC for Mac

Agreed. It was a trip down memory lane, but not a pleasant one. First thing I did after the install was to install WinAmp, which crashed Win98 to bluescreen. Even after uninstalling it (using safe mode), Win98 still doesn't run right. I never thought much of Win98 anyway, but last night's...

    ever considered tikiwiki ?

Ed -- I don't think that there's any compelling reason for there to be an 'official' wiki associated with the forums. Arguably, it could be used for things like FAQs/HOWTOs, etc., but for general discussion, it is quite a bit more free-wheeling and open than the forums need to be. Moderation...

    Virtual PC for Mac

Ok. Maybe the later pressings added that. The original copy I have definitly is not bootable. It came with a boot floppy instead. It was an early (first revision) release, so I don't find it surprising that later revs would be bootable.. *shrug*

    ever considered tikiwiki ?

Another variant is TWiki - http://twiki.org - it's perl/rcs/diff driven, so it doesn't require PHP or a database or whatever... We use TWiki @ work and it's extremely useful. Looks like tikiwiki is a different project, but with some of the same ideas...

    Apple iPod Software update!

After the 10.2.4 disaster, I'm almost afraid to install this... almost.. :D

    Virtual PC for Mac

Hmmm... This got me to digging around in my box of unused and forgotten CD's... :) The CD I had woudn't even boot, but fortunately, I have the floppy and was able to capture that to start the install. As I type this, it's well into its way copying files to the harddrive (and it's the first...

.Mac Webmail broken on Mozilla (RedHat 8)?

Hrm.. That's odd. I was able to make evolution work without any trouble. What kind of problems were you having with getting evolution to work with .mac? Given that you could get Mozilla Mail working with .mac suggests to me that it's not some bizzare networking issue. Maybe some kind of odd...

    X11 Version 0.3 (Public Beta 3) released

I installed .3 last night, after nearly an hour of waiting for the download (as I battled every other geek on the planet trying to get the thing from the overloaded servers). It seems to be quite a bit snappier on screen-draws than before; the quartz-integration is going well. At this rate, I...

    Broken battery on TiBook?

Do you get the startup chime at all when on battery-only? If so, you can try to zap pram (cmd-option-p-r at startup), and see if that helps. But I get the impression that you don't even get that, so the only thing I can think of to try is to reset the PMU. It might be glitched into not...

    Virtual PC for Mac

The answer to all of the above is most definitely yes. That's exactly what I use VPC for -- VPN to work, do what I need there, transfer files back and forth, etc. Transferring standard office files (Word, Excel, etc.) are no problem with the MacOSX-native versions of the apps. Email is a bit...

Just purchased an Airport Base Station for my PC- have a few ?'s

Just thought I'd mention... I had a look at the Configurator (linked in my previous post), and it seems to have everything you could need in there. It even has an "Upload Firmware.." option in the menu. Very cool. I can even run this on my Linux machine.... :)

    updating from 10.2.1 to 10.2.4

I'll second (or third or fourth :) ) the combo update suggestion, and would add that when you do the upgrade, remove the battery from the 'book. My TiBook luckily survived the upgrade (before I knew any better), but my iBook is going to have to have its battery replaced. I've posted a bunch of...

Just purchased an Airport Base Station for my PC- have a few ?'s

You can configure the Airport with a PC, but the software is all third-party, so some features may be missing. I found this on Google: http://edge.mcs.drexel.edu/GICL/people/sevy/airport/#Configurator It claims to be able to handle the Snow/Extreme base-stations. I haven't looked at the...

    System preferences

Usually, these are stored in /Library/PreferencePanes. You may also find them in ~/Library/PreferencePanes, where '~' is your home directory. If they're not in either of those, you might look at /System/Library/PreferencePanes, but that would be a really bad place for them to be in the first...

    Why is my sound gone?!

If you're still having problems with sound, you probably need to run Disk Utility and run a Verification/Repair of disk permissions (Under the First Aid tab). It could be that there are still some files hanging around that belong to the deleted user that have permissions such that no current...

10.2.4 killing iBook / PowerBook battery

Wow. I can't believe that no one here has had anything to say about this. I've even mentioned it in chat a couple of times, and nobody seems to have heard about it. This post is to bump this so that everyone who uses "View new threads" will see it (again), and to try to gather my findings on the...

How much do you pay for your connection speed

The price per kb of bandwith varies wildly, depending on cable vs. dsl vs. whatever, and whether the pipe is shared (as it is with cable). That said, I do pretty well (or, so I think).. I get 768k/768k on my DSL for about US$50/month. No usage caps, no server restrictions, and no home...

.Mac Webmail broken on Mozilla (RedHat 8)?

I don't know... when you reinstalled, did you make any changes to Mozilla prefs (especially javascript- and cookies-related things)? Are you running the 1.1 version that ships with RH8, or did you upgrade? Are you coming through a proxy server that might be causing issues? WebMail works on your...

Application to monitor traffic on Ethernet link

Are you sure? I found this page: http://www.etherpeg.org/ There's a link to an X version at the bottom of the page. I don't know how well it works; it wants me to make perms changes to stuff in /dev, which I'm not really willing to do for this right now. However, I also found this...

    Removing "kext" kernel extensions

That's true... I forgot about the SCSI/FW relationship. I got curious about ADB, too, and I guess that on the 'Books, at least, the keyboard and trackpad are still ADB-esque. During early boot (well before disks even get mounted) there's a line in /var/log/system.log that reads "mach_kernel...
