    WarCraft III Performance on G3

Well, it's pretty clunky on my G4-500 w/ Radeon 8500 unless I turn down the graphics settings.. then it looks like crap. It's smooth as butter on my roommates P3-800 w/Voodoo3 card.. which really chokes me.. especially considering it was the same Voodoo3 card that I was running in my G4 until I...

    Qwartz Extreme

Dooh - Sorry, I missed that part about the iMac. As you suspected there is no way to upgrade the video on an iMac. The only iMac's that support Quartz Extreme, are the new LCD flat panel ones. The CRT based ones all had pre-Radeon/pre-nVidia chips. As I said though, you should still see a...

    wacky mouse problem

I had the same problems with several Microsoft Intellimouse Explorers. The problem has always been wires breaking in the top of the mouse causing erradic operations (pointer jumping around or flying off to one end of the screen) then working fine again. Replacing the mouse is usually the best...

    Qwartz Extreme

You will still see some speed improvements in Jag, but likely not as a result of QE. a Rage128 card is a far cry from a Radeon, which is a minimum requirement. I was in the same situation as yourself, running the stock AGP rage128pro card (and a PCI Radeon).. those cards have been recently...

Should I format my drive HFS+ or UFS?

When I first started using OS X back in the public beta days, I formatted my OS X partition in UFS. While UFS is a superior unix file system, it's a real dog under OS X. Stick with HFS+ for now, otherwise you'll find that legacy (carbonized) software won't let you install itself to UFS...

    POST your favorite OSX Software.

Terminal is overrated.. I use GLTerm - doesn't support transparency (yet), but it kicks serious butt over Terminal in terms of speed and emulation.. it's inexpensive shareware. My favorite OSX software (as per subject line) is GLTerm, BBedit, iTunes3 and GraphicConverter.

    iTunes costs $49.00

I have to agree.. you shouldn't be running as root anyways because the root account is so uniquely different from regular user's accounts.. things like root's home directory is /root whereas all other users are in /Users/username. Root doesn't have it's own ~/Library and ~/Preferences. There's...

    Jaguar is now GM!

Personally, I don't trust the rumour sites.. I'll wait till I get my copy in my hands to find out myself. There was a HUGE arguement about what build was GM when 10.0 was released, and when 10.1 was released.. you'd figure people would learn to ignore the rumour mills until it's on store...

Help me understand video cards and dual display!

Yeah - should be a sweet card.. a little slower than the 8500, but I'm more concerned about price (I use my PS2 for gaming, except for Diablo2 :D ). I should mention, you'll want to take note of what kind of monitors you're going to be hooking up. The 9000 has (1) ADC connector, and (1) DVI...

Help me understand video cards and dual display!

Running both monitors on a AGP dual head card is almost an a necessity. Using a PCI (Radeon or GF#) card to drive the second monitor won't get the same acceleration out of Quartz Extreme that you'll get with the 8500, and the more cost effective 9000 card. I'm planning on yanking my PCI Radeon...

    News Groups Reader(Binary Groups)

Alternatively, if you just want to read groups (except binary groups) and still be able to post the occasional message, you can also use Google as well. It will give you a quick and dirty idea of what's out there. Not to mention that Google has an archive of messages going back MANY years.:D

    News Groups Reader(Binary Groups)

Newsgroups are part of Usenet (another part of the Internet like the web, email, IRC, etc.).. it's kinda like this message forum, but instead has around 85,000 separate groups catering to every imaginable interest. Usenet has been around for much longer than the web, and requires a separate...

    News Groups Reader(Binary Groups)

I dunno - I still use Agent under Virtual PC (the only reason I still use VPC) because I haven't found an acceptible replacement out of all the titles suggested in this thread.. and I still send off email to Forte once or twice a year asking for a Mac version. :D

    Countdown Timer to Jaguar Release

I noticed I received an email from Apple this afternoon with the subject of "New Mac OSX v10.2, "Jaguar," is here!". They should have added, '..sorta' since it's not infact here yet. Of course I already had it on pre-order, so you'd figure that they'd cross reference and pass over people...
